****The Ultimate Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 Noobie Guide Thread****

I've just read that the latest 3.6.10 build now has full 6dof Trackir support. :D

I'm still getting everything set up here but will report back on the implementation of it when it's up and running. ;)

The open installer is running now, its been going over an hour and is currently on MV_Assets.vp at 27% 122049kb . Should it take 4 hours just to get on file??

I went to bed before it had finished last night although 4 hours would seem about right, for everything. It had been going for almost 3 when I left it.

Great, its stopped again on 155304kb. Everything else has downloaded fine including the MV_Complete.7z thats 347mb.

Can i not just download the updated files somewhere else? not using the open installer.

Well i've gone and lost my FS2 discs

So i've grabbed it from gog, half way with the download...

/taps foot

What do i miss out on my installing barebones from the open installer instead of everything. Ive now installed and done everything else except im using barebones instead of all stuff

Yeah I think so, the ships don't look too bad, thats all i've seen so far. Do you have to change ingame settings too? Or is it all handled by the launcher?

Theres a setting or two in-game you can max, but the launcher covers 95% of everything.

Yeah, takes a while. :(

Not sure, probably all the campaigns/mods etc. Maybe you just downloaded only the engine.

I've had quite a jolt with this. It downloaded for hours, but finally finished. The FS2 Source Windows Installer needed its time but finally came through with the 'Done' message.

I closed it only to have Vista pop up with a 'Program not propperly installed' message. Now I can't bothered anymore.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind that much if I had the option of of downloading the files and installing them manually. If I could do that I could muck about as much as I wanted without having to go through the whole downloading process again. I could just use my own backups.

Shame, and I was really looking forward to it too.

The Freespace 2 game itself is installed correctly... right?

And tbh if you people claim to be into PC's/games and you give up after so little trouble and effortthen you don't deserve to play one of the greatest classics of all time with a vastly upgraded engine and hours and hours of gameplay. :p

(I kid, I kid. Kind of) :D

I get your point, but it's not the fact that I wouldn't be prepared to try again, it's the fact that every try takes up about four hours as opposed to a few minutes if I could download the files to a specific file download location and use them from there.

Oh, and yes, FS2 ran correctly after the installation, it really seems to be a problem with the 'FS2 Source Windows Installer' or the files it integrates into the game.

Please don't misunderstand me, I was very pleased with your guide and I appreciate the work you put into it. I really had no trouble at all using it. It's just the installer itself and the files it downloads.

Others probably won't have a problem, so I can only assume it's my rig. But I do like to tinker if something doesn't work, my point of criticism being that the method of the installer prevents me from doing this in an acceptable way.

Congratulations on posting the most comprehensive game thread I've ever read & Thanks, I only wish some more posters would put in the same amount of effort to promote whatever they are in to.
I'll show the thread the respect it deserves & will pick up a copy & give it a Blast.
Thanks again.

Kind words malc, if you like space sims you will fap over this. :)

I just like good games mate I don't really care about the subject, Bit mad when you think about it but like I say I just like Good games. :)

Yes this thread is a great guide and very easy to follow (thanks)
The game is very good from the 3 training missions i have done so far, its easy but im guessing will have loads of depth if i carry on playing.

The people, including myself, that are getting annoyed with the open installer taking 4 or 5 hours to install everything, dont bother, just do the barebones and play it. You are probably like me and done care about having 100 extra campaigns. I downloaded all the manual files in 10 or so minutes and configured in a couple. I tried leaving the OSinstaller on everything again last night and it just sat there doing nothing.

Usually games that take more than about 20 or 30 minutes to install i give them an alt, ctrl delete and remove them. I just dont like games that much to waste my time on a loading screen im afraid (same goes for intro movies you cant skip through)

Once again thanks Richdog

Interesting matty, maybe it is easier then to just choose the barebones... or maybe ticking "download everthing" and then deslecting what you don't need on the next screen may be a good idea. In fact if I remember rightly I may have read someone saying about the downloaded downloading the wrong VP's...

I'm goin got research this tonight and if necessary edit the guide to make it quicker and more painless. Thanks for the feedback guys!

Was also playing agian last night and I am determined to beat it on Insane level... &&&& me it's hard and your wingmen die a LOT. I WILL do it though, even if it kills me. :D

Yeah you most certainly don't need to do the download everything, as once you have you are deleting the VP's anyway to replace them with the latest versions.

All you need is the latest exe, rest you can leave deselected.

Then just follow the rest of the guide and it works a treat.

Was pew pewing with smexy FS2 lovelyness all last night :D
