****The Ultimate Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 Noobie Guide Thread****

Rumour has it this'll run on an Intel x3100 IGP too... might have a crack later on if I get time. Cheers for the excellent 1st post Rich, great read.

To be honest if you load the game without using the VP's (basically ignore the first part of step 4 and don't point to the VP folder) and rteduce the settings in the next steps then yeah... it probably will just about run and still look passable. Give it a try and let us know how it works out. :)

Ye have little faith on the ol' x3100, for an IGP it's not too shabby. Can run HL2, CS:S, and even TF2 with playable frame rates. Granted TF2 requires on hell of a config tweak... :)

That said, I've just seen the mod list for the updated engine... I'll get back to you :D

Woo-hoo that's the kind of post that makes it all worthwhile, congrats! Was the guide easy to use and follow then, are there any bits that caused you issues when reeadint the instrucitons (not including download issues)?

And yeah it took the best part of a day, but it's the type of thing I like doing so it was no trouble really. :)

Well it all went surprisingly easily. I installed things in a slightly different order and didn't instal the readme file into the "mediavp" folder but it doesn't appear to have affected anything. One thing I would suggest is a condensed versh of the installation guide and a list of all the download files reqd. I found I was beginning to lose track of where I was and what files I'd already installed (but thats probably just me). I also noticed someone mentioned about not having to select all when running the installer, maybe that would shorten the time to get the files, it took me about 4-6 hours to get them. Other than that, no probs really, again, a good mod and well worth doing, thanks again.:)

Tell you what, it don't half look nice on a 24" screen at 1920 x 1200, runs like an absolute dream on the system in me sig.

Just tried to download again from the link posted in this thread, appears to be working fine mate. You've not got anything loaded that might be blocking it have you?

Hey, thanks for looking. I went out for a run and it's fine now. must have been bad timing on my part, cheers.

Richdog, can you confirm if this mod works on the original game as well? I've got both here and wonder if I can instal all these mods for that too.:)

The updater will then go away to the internetz and download every component it needs to update the game, and install it for you too. It WILL take a while, so leave it to run for an hour or two or however long it takes until the log displays "Done" and the "Next" button becomes selectable. Congrats, you've just installed FS2 Source. :D

Ive left it downloading twice now and its just stopped after about 40 minutes in.

edit - just stopped again. Looks and sounds good but if it cant download and install properly then time to delete

The original campaign is included with the FS Source files, check Step 4, the yellow text beneath the first screenie. :)

COuld be a conneciton issue at your end mate, mine worked fine.

It's worth trying a few times though, try again this evening. :)

Strange, everyone else seems to have got it working fine. Suggests to me a problem at your end.

Just to echo what others have said, I had no problem downloading through the updater (took ages though) or the mediaVP files in Richdogs guide. My installation is running perfect now with everything maxed and it really does look great :)

I'm using a XBOX 360 Joypad at the moment but i'm wondering if my old saitek cyborg 3D joystic might be better.

Thanks again richdog for your excellent guide :)

Took about 2 hours to get the files here, not too bad. Just playing the advanced training on the original I think, pretty old, but its good. Takes me back to x-wing vs tie-fighter.

I take it that its ok to use the CD version, thats the one im using. Ill try again later on

Excellent guide. I got FS2 when it was free, but never tried the new VPs. Looks great.

Only problem I had installing was having to update OpenGL. I've got an issue with the FSPort VP though in that I'm informed that two models are unavailable, then in the first training mission it doesn't proceed past hitting \ for full speed.

Will try normal FSPort when I get back home to see if it is the VP or something else missing.
