The unofficial Guild Wars 2 hype thread (with dynamic worlds)

Excellent graphics.

Waiting for more info before I get sucked into any hype, MMOs are masters of the hype machine often to the detriment of actual facts come release.

The key factor for me will be whether or not it has some form of open world PvP.

It has been so long coming that I have given up waiting; still play GW on and off though. I think they'll keep GW open for time to come. Its not that busy anymore and the servers are a bit pants already.

Must max deldrimmor for HoM.......

I really hope they release some real information about skills/traits like actual screenshots of everything and some example skills.

I must say its looking a bit... weird atm. The first 5 skills are defined by your weapon for a warrior? I can only guess the same applies to an elementalist with an element. Its sounding like its hugely restricting things.
Yeah the first five are weapon skills (you get 10 skills in total this time). Four are class specific skills and the last is a healing skill. I have no idea if you can chose a number of different weapon skills or not, but you can switch weapons on the fly that give you five different skills. I quite like the sound of it for warrior, just not sure how it's going to work with other classes.

Also, those videos above show a few skills. If you go to the warrior or ele blog it gives you a name of each attack.

What happens to GW's 1 when GW's 2 comes out? Are they shutting all the servers down and everyone has to get new accounts?
They will continue development of GW1 and server will continue. I would expect player numbers to plumet even further though.

Any wall papers of those screen shots? Something a bit bigger.
Fraid not, there are some wallpapers on the warrior page but they aren't in game.

Meh, theres still been no word on what all these titles will mean (to my knowledge). Decent weapons can't be put into HoM anyway and decent armour is... *shrug* lots of them and what difference does it make?

@Lyon, I remember seeing an ele video with a few skills but it doesn't really mean much. Think all the ones shown were more or less ones from GW anyway. And i really can't see Sever/Gash/Final being all that different. But its sounding a bit dodgy this whole skill system. I kinda like the idea behind Traits but theres no real info on them (and 1 or 2 in isolation is meaningless lets be honest) and it just feels like the skills have been restricted.

Ok its understandable that a 2-handed Sword would get powerful attacks and a regular Longsword would get quick attacks. But it really sounds like it restricts builds, even if you get a limited choice of the 5 skills you must take. And theres not much information on the 'healing skill' slot other than you take 1 always, doesn't really mean it'll be any good unless you dedicate skills/traits to it.

I can't see falling numbers mattering much. What was there stance on going back to get titles and stuff for your HoM? I seem to recall it was initially the case that you could go back to GW1 and get more stuff for them but that this changed and would be fixed once you created the char.

No idea either but I only need another 15k or so.

I'm going to wait a while to find out what achievements mean and how to set up my HoM before starting GW2. I think one GW2 char will be related to one GW1 char; once you link them you won't be able to add more to HoM in GW1. I hope the names are not linked based on this relationship.

i think the 2 handed sword is for AoE ala the scythe in GW.

Doubt it, they're a descendant of the character. At the most you'd have to use the same last name but given chars could use more than 2 names (first and surname) they'll probably just let you rename the char as you want. You'd assume 1-1 basis but i see no reason you couldn't do it for lots of them, i'd be pretty ****ed if i linked my GW1 Ranger to a GW2 Ranger only to find out the GW2 Ranger is utter ****e and have wasted it.

Hadn't thought about that, makes sense they replace Scythes.

GW WIKI said:
Then, when Guild Wars 2 arrives, each of these monuments will correspond to special features your Guild Wars 2 characters can "inherit" from your own legendary past, giving you access to exclusive titles, companions , weapons, attire, and miniatures. These inherited items are unique: there is no other way within Guild Wars 2 to acquire them.

— Official website

GW Wiki:-

This feature does not allow characters to be transferred between Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2. However, it does allow character names to be reserved.
It does not support bulk transfer of armor, items, characters, or gold. However, acquiring select items in GW1 will confer benefits in GW2 via the Hall of Monuments.
Each of your GW1 characters has its own Hall of Monuments. However, the rewards will be "unlocked" account-wide and will transfer to your GW2 account, and it is possible to display all monuments attained on one account in GW1. Accomplishments dedicated in GW1's Hall of Monuments will continue to update your GW2 account even after GW2's release.

You could well be right but it is a bit ambiguous; I'm out of touch!

I've never heard anything about micro transactions in GW2. There were no more MTs in GW than any other MMO.

I think there's a fine line between having dynamic/implicit quests that work well, and leaving the player befuddled as to what exactly it is they need to do to progress. While aribtrary "kill 10 ogres" type quests may seem a little contrived, they also help novice players get a grip on what is required. If you have to rely on world events to know what's going on there is a good chance these things will just pass some players by.

A fundamental part of the RPG is the concept of a 'quest log' (with precise completion criteria) and very, very few games from that genre will be able to pull off something not going down that route, massively multiplayer online or not.

The game looks pretty from what i've seen in those character skill videos. I never played GW1, but I'm hoping to find the time to play this when it's released.

"a dynamic living breathing world"

That gets trotted out every time a new mmo is released. I've yet to see anything even vaguely close in an mmo.

Does Eve Onlines free market, production system and state sovereignty not count?

I played GW originally when it first came out and felt I didn't really give it enough of a chance, I simply played it like an action RPG and subsequently got bored very quick!

I've been through enough flops (Vanguard (the only one that turned into a decent game), AOC, WAR, AION among numerous others, To not be stupid enough to get caught up in the prerelease hype, no matter how good the game is it'll never, ever meet your expectations so the lack of hype on here is actually very refreshing. I have enjoyed several MMOs where everyone else says there a flop but because I never got super hyped for them I cN appreciate them for what they are.

Kind of, it's certainly a lot more dynamic than any other mmo (out in 0.0 at any rate), but I was thinking more in terms of dynamic environments on land - forests that can be destroyed by resource farming, cities that can be levelled and built, populations of wildlife that react to player actions.

Silly hard to actually manage in a game of course, but if someone claims to have a 'living' world, you should be able to kill it ;)
