I could not find one of these so I thought I would start one :D

Basically what this thread is for is to share your own stories about silly and stupid hair-brained mistakes you have made while computing be it during a system build or anything. You know the moments I am on about the ones where you shout aloud to no-one in particular "oh ffs!" ;)

I will start...

About 6 months ago I did a system build for a friend, so like always bought all the bits etc and started the assembly, once finished I fired it up ready to install Windows to discover that the optical drive would not read CD/DVD's, it powered up all fine. So first port of call take the case off to examine the connections which were fine and tried again with the same result. After my third try of this I was starting to get annoyed so off with the case yet again... to my utter amazement I suddenly found the problem, you see it turns out (for some stupid reason) that the DVD drive would work better with a SATA cable plugged it to and motherboard!!! LMAO!

Needless to say the air was blue, orange, black and everything in between, I must have had a brain fart or something!

Well there you go peeps so share your own daft stories :) I for one look forward to reading them.

All builds I have ever done apart from the most recent one suffered the same user error.

Not plugging in the ATX power supply. Maybe I thought it was something else, but 3 times though?

:(

I hardly ever make mistakes, im just that good.

Slamming my toes into door jambs however, i seem to be a pro at :(

I am also a pro at clumsiness.

We are renovating the kitchen at the moment so there are plenty of 'new' protrusions in the form of bolts from the floor and walls to gouge parts of me away too :(

Cut through a gas pipe that I thought was a central heating water pipe. Wasted time, money and effort "freezing" said gas pipe added insult to injury.

Plugged a dell sas cable into a 4pin plug from a PSU.
Non standard Dell connector + me not looking at the wires correctly = one burnt smoking SAS hard drive....
15k sas drives are not cheap!

I've just thought of a **** up i did, that i only noticed yesterday..

for the last year ive been wondering why my cpu was running at 60 degrees while idle, and i figured out i had put the cpu fan on upside down :( right way round now and runs at 37 though! :)

I soldered up an amplifier with the power supply on the wrong way round and put 110V DC the wrong way through the smoothing capacitors. They exploded immediately and shot a pair of jets of quite a lot of noxious smoke into the room :p

I tried fixing the caps on a PC PSU only for the new ones (exactly the same) to explode goo everywhere! Nearly crapped myself! Luckily I was wearing safety glasses. Just in case!
