VW obviously doesnt want to make the UP GTI near quick as the polo GTI otherwise most UP customers will get the polo GTI instead for few pennies more.

price/power wise for the UP GTI is just right

Surely you either want a polo sized car or an up sized car. I don't think the extra performance really takes away from the sale of one over the other. If you want an Up but it's not powerful enough, then maybe the customer goes elsewhere because they don't like the polo.

If the GTi does end up being a big success, i wonder if VW will release an R version, with say the 180bhp engine.

Pointless trying to second guess the decisions made inside a Ddub boardroom. Whether a super hot "R" version gets built, will basically come down to the bottom line. Vdub have fines and bills to pay for the emissions scandal. In the near future I would imagine their main driving force will be profit. Plus, if they can sell the std Gti by the bucket full, there's not much point investing money in anything too exotic.

Quite like this. Good philosophy- (relatively) light, cheap and fun.
I agree. I think they're pitched it at just the right spot in the market. It does what it does well enough, and at the right money. (which is why they are selling like hot cakes.) There isn't a car that's been built, that someone doesn't say "ah! But it would be better with a little more power" Or different this that or the other.

Apparently you can't fit a 4 cylinder in there, so it's only 3. Not sure you could get much more power from a 3 turbo'd could you?

Also, people calling these Hot Hatches, well they are hatch backs, but surely we need more categories now? As this is nowhere near a Fiesta ST, which I would class as a hot hatch. Hot City? Sounds like a dubious spa but I'm open to suggestions.

Already had this debate a page back (agreed, it's not a hot hatch) I do see "warm hatch" thrown around. Either sound hilarious and the car is meant to make you smile, so I'm down for either.

Worryingly my order number no longer works on VW tracking website, and dealer has told me the 42 week wait is real (on both the Up GTi and Polo Beats) and VW are investigating what the hell has happened. I need my new car by September (208 GTi by Peugeot Sport will need tax at £115, service at £300 and new tyres at ~£500!)

And the £500 finance incentive has now been withdrawn, I reckon mainly down to the long wait....

I went for a test drive. My lease on my fiesta red is up and I’m looking at something fun to throw around.

The up was pretty good fun. The red dash is ugly, as is the plastic phone holder. I do however love the concept of just providing a holder and amp. Great cost saving simplicity.

Ok, so as far as the performance... it was pretty ok. The engine needs a little more get up and go. The gear box could do with a bit more snap and suspension could be a little firmer. The steering is light but lacks ultimate feedback.

It looks cool, and feels well built. I kind of like the body work nakedness on the doors, feels very light, but, solidly built.

In comparison to the fiesta red, it’s just not as sharp or feel as fast, fun or planted. When the waiting list is done and price comes down a bit more then the decision might be harder, but at the moment with the deals for fiesta’s that are out there, it’s a very easy decision to go back to ford.

Now if they made a club sport version, no backseats 140/150bhp firmer better suspension and steering then id part with the wedge, but at the moment, it’s a bit of a tepid hatch than a hot hatch.

Overall very well put post, I'm coming from a 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport, which with my back condition, is just too firm. I like my spine :p I've been pencilled in for a delivery date of August, which at that point I'll be getting it on new plates on 1st September :p

People keep coming back to the power, but it's missing the point. There are hundreds of faster cars out there, and they're probably all (significantly) more expensive. Buy a Polo GTI if you want, it's a lot quicker and guess what- seven grand more expensive. It's not supposed to be a hot hatch, it's just supposed to be a quirky, fun small car. That's how most "hot hatches" were once upon a time, before the power wars escalated and hatchbacks ended up north of £30k.

Those are my thoughts. In my view it's supposed to be a fun little car, that's cheap and cheerful (relatively speaking) I had a little look at one last weekend. They are well screwed together with enough tweaks to the styling to set them apart. I'm not a huge fan of bare paint in car interiors but it's in keeping with the cars style.

I can see myself getting that interior wrapped early on!

He...he... that crossed my mind. When I see bare painted car interiors I just think of 1970's Ford Escorts and think to myself have we not been there done that? Likewise what is it with piano black in cars? It's just about the least durable material you could choose! You only have to look at it hard and you can scratch it.

Not sure what the choices are in the Up Gti, and whether you are stuck with the red patterned dash either??

Would wrapping an interior even be possible on the interior of a car? I would imagine in summer the interior temps could touch over 40. I wouldn't fancy returning to a car where everything had just peeled off..:):):)
