The Weekend Football Thread *spoilers*

Nah I've got a feeling this fixture has landed perfectly for Liverpool to go on a great run.

Lennon is massive for Spurs, he really has stepped up a level this year. He's out for 2-3 weeks after hurting his groin last week, as did Benny Ekotto, another big player for Spurs. His replacement is Gareth Bale... who is defensively woefull :(

On the other hand Liverpool have just got Torres and Gerrard approaching full fitness.

It's at Anfield... hardly a happy hunting ground for Spurs. I'd put my money on the scousers.

I think we could see Bassong at LB with a CB pairing of King and Daws? Or maybe Corluka and Daws with Hutton RB.

Only real positive for us is that we didn't lose. Love the way people are making their minds up on Aquliani after a handful of appearances though.

Dont get me wrong, I havent made a final opinion on him. I'm merely saying that he has looked very very average so far. I truly dont think anyone can deny that, there may well be reasons for it, but regardless of the reasons I dont think it can be denied that he has looked average so far which seems a reasonable statement.

Admittedly its a new league and admittedly he has been injured for a long while, however even given those things , for £20 million quid, I expect to at least see the odd flash of £20million.

Obviously it takes time to adjust and get fit, but even so I would expect to see something that shows the value, even if its only 4 or 5 high quality passes during a game, or 1 mazey run past defenders, even just a few minutes worth highlighting the potential 20 million quality. A hint that theres a 20 mil player just awaiting fitness.

But I havent seen that...not even close. I hope that he is able to adjust to the English game and regains fitness and shows what he can do because frankly I really think it will have a massive impact if he does end up not working out in the circumstances.

Its not even the mazey runs, generally a half decent player can ping the ball around no matter where he is on earth, a ball is a ball and a pitch is a pitch, when not under pressure he's underhitting passes constantly, and overhitting.

I remember his first sub appearances loads of people were praising him for one pass he dinged 50 yards and someone ran onto, he just knocked it into space, he did another one 5 mins later that was useless, but that was ignored.

So far his passing has been poor, very poor, he seems quite easy to push off the ball, though thats something that could be not sure what players, nor himself can get away with so he's holding back. He's seems easily pressured though, not hugely quick to play forwards and for someone probably looking to prove himself and make a difference, not very busy at all when on the pitch, just kind of waiting for the ball to come to him, just to give it away.

Ronaldo in his first games wasn't brilliant, but you could instantly see the "signs" there was something there, same with Fabregas, for £20mil + (how much was he exactly?) theres been no signs that even come close to hinting he might be worth that much.

THe one key thing we should all have learned tonight is that commentary for these games when sky isn't involved is absymal. The city game was quite hilarious, I'm not sure Boro had a shot on target in the first half, but apparently they dominated and pressured City all over, despite half the city team today having barely played with at least 3 completely not match fit players.

Barca drew this evening aswell in a game that should have probably seen a penalty or two go to Valencia, superb shot by Henry which Pedro knocked the rebound in from.

Thing is though BaZ is that when he played for Roma he was distinctly average in a distinctly average midfield then(Bar Danielle DeRossi). Never really commanded a position as his own and was not someone who was a week in week out regular due to indifferent form or fitness issues.

I remember watching him against Utd a few years back and Alan Smith put him to shame. It's a funny one because he does have a good pedigree but by and large Italians have never really prospered in the Prem.

Does no-one care about the FA Cup anymore?

5k at Wigan
11k at Bolton
25k at Villa (2 PL sides)
11k at Pompey
8k at Sheff Wed
15k at Stoke

Some terrible attendances today, I realise cup tickets aren't always included in season tickets but that doesn't mean you can't go! It seems the FA Cup may end up like the League Cup. Anyone have any ideas to spice it up again? Place in the CL? Or is it unfair to to get into the CL after 6(?) games?

8.5K at Middlesborough too.

8k is double what I'd heard.

Given our recent run of form, I'm happy to of got anyone through the gates.

I could have sworn that not so long ago you claimed that you didn't know much about him and you based your opinion on what you were told by some friends that followed Italian football.

What have you done since then? Picked up some Serie A season reviews in the January sales? :p

Erm no I don't think I have ever claimed that

I watch a fair bit of Italian football when it doesn't send me to sleep as it's usually on when the missus is watching some guff on TV. However, if you want to use that as justification for yet another one of Rafa's amazing signings that will eventually come good then by all means knock yourself out :p

As I said, can you think of any Italian (with the exception of Ravanelli) who has prospered in the Premiership ?

Zola wasn't bad :p

And I've not said either way whether Aquilani will make it or not, I'll wait and see thank you very much :p

edit: and I'm sure you did say that but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Aye true, Ravanelli was good and Zola was world class.

I could have sworn you said that Aquiallani was the perfect replacement for Alonso  :p :D

He's only going to get better and he is naturally gifted so that will shine through soon. I doubt he's used to the intensity yet, he seems to like a few seconds on the ball, if he can cut that down a little he'll improve

Problem with him so far is he's looking for quick one-twos and space to play the ball in to and no one's reading him. Pacheco had the same problem a few games ago when he came on as a sub. He caught out Gerrard, Kuyt and Torres in the space of 5 minutes with quick one touch passing. The other players simply aren't used to one touch positive football :(

I'm not really bothered that he got caught on the ball a few times because I'm confident he'll adjust to the speed of the English game but whether his game is suited to the way we play I'm not so sure.
