The Wire appreciation thread

Yeah the new journalist characters in season 5 are all far too two-dimensional, especially considering the quality of nearly everyone else. The myriad of plot threads that had to be accounted for kind of cost the ability to show them in any kind of social, out-of-work context, but even then, they were just too plain. Shifty lying journalist is shifty and lies. Eager reporter woman is eager. Honest and forthright editor tries his best to run the show, but oh no, the suits are keeping him down!

Season 5 for me was the least believable season, which is ironic considering the writer of the show was a journalist. Perhaps what he wrote was actually true, even so, the dodgy character journalist guy still annoys me. Still the last few episodes are epic.

I had trouble liking the homeless news story but it all comes together in the end. The idea of the journalist lying and making up the stories is somewhat OOT, but it's very important in the whole storyline of the show- all 5 seasons. The whole system is in a cycle of corruption which is failing the people and the watchdog, the media(especially newspaper journalists), are more interested in stories that will sell than in the truth. That's not just down to corruption, but also the pressure that they are facing from TV/Web.

I liked the way they handled education and politics in previous seasons. I get the impression that they had decided to focus their attentions on the media for the final season regardless of whether they could back it up with a great story. In the end they settled for the homeless story. It wasn't terrible but it could've been better.

Not that I know of. I'm almost certain there won't be anymore. I don't think it was ever intended to run and run. The creators went on to make a mini series about the most recent war in Iraq, Generation Kill. It's currently airing on Channel 4. I've not seen any of it yet but it's meant to be very good.

when you finish the very last episode its like a part of your life is now missing!

Really funny you should say that. It is like a part of my life is missing.

I have really got into the characters now, people think I'm barmy when i talk about the series.

I do have a treat though, my missus is going to watch it with me from season 1
after I've finished season 5. :D

Maybe you could go to Baltimore for your next holiday, take to drinking Jamesons for breakfast and speak in an American accent that slips back to English when you get really riled up.

Just finished this... Was thinking about which characters end with a clean conscience, as it were. It seems most people end up with some dirt, or some weight on them. Hell, if not that then they're flat out dead.

So who makes it out OK?

Bubbles - Gets clean, forgives himself, and gets reconciled to his sister.
Cutty - Gets out of the game, runs his gym.
Namond - Doing well at school, in with the Colvins who are looking after him.
Prezbo - Found his niche, teaching.

Who else makes it out OK? Maybe Poot, but even that seems a stretch?
