The Wire appreciation thread

Really funny you should say that. It is like a part of my life is missing.

I have really got into the characters now, people think I'm barmy when i talk about the series.

Too true.

The characters are beyond description.

There is too much to praise in The Wire, one of the most outstanding features for me was the use of immature and young actors.

I have never seen such convincing acting from kids. Normally they ruin shows for me with wooden and dull acting. In this, I think they made the show:

Randy, Michael, Namond, Poot, Brodie, D'Angelo to name but a few were outstanding portrayals.

I might have to watch this again.

It makes me sad that British TV has never come close to something of this depth despite the reputation that has been built up over the years.

Von- I would say Freeman got out well (with a pension etc), Herc is enjoying himself, Carver is doing well, Ronnie is good, Carcetti got where he wanted to go, Clay Davies seems fine, I also love Michael being the new Omar. Michael was a tremendous character and I like to think of him as Omar 2 :P

I agree. Snoop was one of my favourites. I think the fact that a few of the major characters were actually involved in gangs helped to draw out more realistic performances.

Just finished watching all five seasons and I can safely say that this is the best tv series I've ever watched. It's rare a thing, but for me the show went above and beyond the huge amount of hype surrounding it. A true masterpiece, every episode, every moment, finely crafted for your viewing pleasure.

BTW, it's hard to decide but I think Lester Freamon was my overall favourite character. Pretty much every word he spoke seemed to carry so much weight, you could have a whole book full of meaningful and powerful quotes from him.

I have all the boxsets thanks to my brother, watched season 1 and loved it. However, i'm really struggling to keep watching season 2 ... i've read people say it's the worst but you have to obviously watch it. I keep turning off half way through the first episodes! :(

To be fair not many US shows come close to the wire. It was a special show and I doubt anything will come close for a long time, if ever.

There were a few British actors in the show though, Jimmy McNulty, Tommy Carcetti and Stringer Bell, if that counts toward anything.

TBH I didn't know McNulty was British until I saw him in Centurion a few months after watching the wire!

I did like the way that 95% of the characters in the wire were not safe from being killed off to help a good story line

Has anyone watched the corner? quote a few actors from the wire pop up in that as well but it focuses more on the "The Game" the ending of that really did surprise me.

I didn't either. I was also surprised to find out the actor that played Stringer Bell was British. I saw him in a bank robbery film and he was speaking with a London accent, it was quite a shock :D. Goes to show that they can mimic the American accent well. Which isn't always the case with Americans doing British accents, as proved in Game of Thrones.

After watching season 1-6 of the Sopranos at uni, I was pretty sure there wasn't anything else that could be as good as that, until a couple of my mates pointed me in the direction of The Wire raving on about how it was the best tv series ever...

Took a good few episodes of season 1 to get into it, but after that, the story grew and so did the characters. (omar is my fave)

Now finished season 2, which was different, but just as good as the first imo. Can't wait to get hold of season 3 !

Into the 4th season, felt it lost it's way a bit in the 3rd. The second was the best for me, in the sense that there were characters I could relate to, believe in.

My favourite character

I thought the fourth was brilliant. The school setting worked really well in terms of showing the futility of the education system in keeping the kids away from their drugs careers.

That and the Marlo plot was rolling along really well by then.

So i started watching this recently and im now towards the end of the first season, it's not the sort of thing id normally watch, crime and medical shows that is, unless like with dexter there's a twist to it that makes it interesting, it's quite well written and there's some interesting stuff at times but im waiting for it to live up to the hype it gets, does it get any better?

It's mostly all a lot of talk and back and forth going on, so far only the above chap Omar has put on an entertaining show.
