The Wire appreciation thread

i watched all five seasons in a few weeks over the summer.
it was immense. can't recommend it enough.

it's difficult to explain it to people, beacuse it's so much more than a cop show. it's about everything aspect of life
impressed with BBC for showing the whole lot in one go.
got to watch it all again :p

I totally agree. Credit to the BBC for showing the whole series in such a short space of time. There's no other way to watch The Wire. That's the first time in a long time that I felt they were really earning the license fee.

Took to the wire on the word of mouth, missed the first 3 episodes, hook lined and totally sunk from the off.

It impressed the hell out of me, the first american show that has in a very long time.. think back to la Law:)

The characters were so strong, totally beliveable, by the end of the last series i was rooting for all of them, happy as larry it worked out for most.

Despite the harsh tone of the series, it simpley was a rollercoaster of affection for me.

What replaces it, im back on late night dvd's, watching re'runs of bloody ds9 on bravo. Empty feeling left behind i don't think will be replaced anytime soon, im just so glad i watched it.

Props to the beeb, having to wait between the series would have been a nightmare.

Agreed. I heard about it word of mouth and got the first couple of DVDs from Lovefilm which had me hooked. I'd given up on the rumours of it getting shown terrestrial/freeview so bought the Seasons 1-4 on DVD. 4 weeks later it's on BBC2!

Excellent series, best thing I've seen since the early season of The West Wing.

Very silly. This was never meant to be a show that ran and ran. I started watching just as Season 5 was ending in The States. If you do decide to watch it then I suggest you get hold of at least 4/5 episodes and try to watch them back to back.

The Wire is unusual in that it doesn't tail off as the seasons tick by. Each season has a theme and looks at different areas of the city, eg schools, the press, docks which helps keep it fresh.

Plenty of good series have a blinding first couple of seasons then get stuck in a rut, the really good stuff (like The West Wing) can do three or four and then fall into a rut. Better to kill something off before it turns into predictable durge.

I think a friend owns a season or two on DVD. I might bug them about lending me the first season if possible and try an episode or two out. I know very little about it, but so many people recommend it I am happy to give it a shot.

As said above, you really need more than a couple of episodes. A lot of the characters talk in ... erm ... local dialect and it took me about four episodes to get my head around it. By them I was hooked.

There's lots of talking and no single character really stands out as being the lead so there's a lot going on at any time. It takes a few episodes to really get into it but you should be able to tell that this is different to 99% of all the other shows out there within the first 10 minutes.

The Wire is the best TV show created. Season 4 is perfection on a tv screen, the children actors are top notch.

5 Seasons was just about right, I feel too many shows get bogged down in making shed loads of episodes and this ultimately degrades their quality. Sopranos and The West Wing suffered a bit in the last season for sure.

I keep hearing great things about this show, but I am always put off watching a show once it is cancelled / ending.

Am I being silly though in this case?
I know what you mean, nothing worse investing time into a series to find out that it's been cancelled and the story is left hanging.

But not the case with The Wire, it comes to a natural conclusion and ties up any lose ends.

I only got round to watching this a month back but once I started it was back to back for a few weeks until I had done the lot.

Highly recommended.
