The Wire appreciation thread

Been re-watching this for about the fifth time, since a couple of friends talked about how good it was (I'm not the only one who is re-watching it because of that conversation!).

Also re-reading the Sepinwall blog analysis of the show, lots of great points of note to be garnered there, even though I've read it before. Studying that and the show makes you realise how much of a masterpiece this show is and how far beyond anything else it really is.

I watched season 1 and 2 and thought it was pretty good but soon into season 3 I got bored, should I go back and give it another go?

I honestly don't know how anybody could get bored of this show, no matter how many times I've re-watched it, it's exciting and interesting to focus on with no boredom arising.

The first watch through met with no complaints either, I never found anything boring, none of the seasons were any more dull than the others really. Each one had it's own gripping narrative, but they never held your hand and helped you get through something, patience does help at times, it's not like other spoon fed entertainment or drama.

One thing annoys me...
why did they decide to end Omar's story the way they did?

Season three was probably my favourite, it's worth giving another chance, the thing i liked most about the wire is how a few of the characters cause problems and upset the chain of command, season three and five were particularly good for that.

Part of the way through Season 4 and it's still amazing.

Season 2 is a bit slow and a filler imo, but gets much better in S3.

That angered me at first, but then I realised they probably did it for a few reasons

  • To avoid the classic tv showdown which may have been to cliched.
  • To show the true nature of the game, here one minute gone another without warning.

I've been watching this on Sky Atlantic having missed it when it first aired, realising that unless they run the seasons back to back I'll be watching it for a few years I decided to look for the dvd boxed set and was surprised at how high the price was.

Just my opinion of course but with it now being a repeat on TV, and if you have a tv license, pay for sky or Virgin then I don't see a problem with getting a digital download (torrent etc) of all the seasons.

If the moral issue of taking from DVD sales bothers you then you can do the "right thing" and delete it after you've watched it.

Brillient show proberly one of the best TV series's I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

Yes!
I started watching it last Sunday afternoon and I'm on Episode 9 Season 4.
I've watched on and off all week as I've been off ill.
I got it because people on here recommended it.

Omfg omfg omfg omfg omfg

Omar death just omfg

Can't believe how it ended for him :(

Just watched the last 2 episodes ever :(

Perfect ending to perfect TV, I don't think I could possibly have scripted a better ending and I am really going to miss the show :(

It could possibly have had a lot of legs left to run with if they had wanted too but I guess it was best to take it out at the top. Great show!!!!!!!!

One show thought everyone raved on about, I watched and was like "Wow, for once the hype was true".

I hear the guy who played Omar (can never remember his name even though he's in Boardwalk Empire) is starring in a wrestling drama show, about being on the road and stuff.
