The Wire appreciation thread

I got right near the end of season 1 but i stopped there. It was good but cant say that it really gripped me to be honest. Was the same with the shield that was really hyped, i got near the end of season 1 and then found myself watching other things.

I loved the first couple series of 24 and then maybe one other when jack came back 'from the dead' so to speak but the ones inbetween those were pretty boring too.

For me, these cop/political series should stop after a couple of seasons. Though does sound like a lot of you enjoyed more than a couple of this so i could be wrong =]

I felt the same after Season 1. There's a lot of groundwork being laid but nothing really happens - if you're after instant gratification and questions being answered quickly then go and watch CSI :p

The seasons that follow make you realise why Season 1 was necessary.

Can people stop comparing The Wire to 24? It's the most absurd comparison.

I am not saying they are the same lol, 24 much more action/entertaining to me, wire more suspense/drama.I merely meant another popular series that I grew bored of. I actually loved CSI Vegas until they got rid of grissom lol

I just finished season 1. I gota say its ok so far, but sometimes I find it hard to understand what the black guys are talking about in the hood lol.

It really doesn't pull any punches in terms of people using slang and gang lingo. It is absolutely not the sort of show that you can watch while fiddling on your phone or whatever, because you will just totally lose track of what is going on and who's saying what to whom.

subtitles...lol. Got full set DVD and watched it last year and this year, classic.

Kima Kima..enuff said....and seeing all the characters in other shows from Law & order, Numbers, Broadwalk empire, Burn notice, Good wife....the list goes on. Says loads about The wire in my opinion...

Five years ago I bought the boxed set. I watched the first three series in no time at all and enjoyed (if that's the right word!) the experience so much that I stopped there. I wanted to save the rest.

Two years ago I watched the first three again and then the fourth. And again I stopped, savouring the fact that I still had another series to fall back on.

Over the last two weeks I've binged the whole lot, thanks to it being on NowTV until mid December. The convenience of not having to faff around with DVDs lured me through series four and on, at last, into five.

Now it's done. I'll never watch another episode for the first time ever again. I feel... exhausted. But in a great way. What a masterpiece. A depressing, authentic, gritty masterpiece that makes you despair in the most ridiculously satisfying way. And the most shocking yet satisfying part was...

Omar's death! What a frustratingly throw-away but brilliantly brave bit of writing. The moment he fell, I knew I was ready for it all to end. It was even more devastating than watching Stringer Bell fall. Final somehow; an end to the hope that something special and 'right' might come from all that chaos.

But the real world isn't a fairy tale, which is why The Wire is going to be remembered for a very long time indeed.

Very late to this thread :D I watched every episode (for the first time) over the summer. Absolutely amazing show - up there with BSG as my favorite series of all time. If I'm honest, the last season wasn't quite as good as the rest....

I found the story of McNulty staging those murders to be a bit far-fetched in the context of what had come before it

There is no way I could pick out, say, my 10 favorite scenes....or 3 favorite characters.....just can't be done.

Any further news on the remaster? Been putting off watching it again...

A lot of rumours but I can't find any definite announcement of Blu Ray or a scheduled air date.

I would hold off for now. If it does go 1080p 16:9 (and the crops are handled well... after all it was always intended to be 4:3) it could be amazing.
