The Witcher-Official Thread

With the exception of Oblivion... its an impressive line-up. (i dont rate Oblivion as highly as the others) I'd rather play The Witcher over Oblivion any day.. but anyway not so bad i guess...considering PCZ isnt really a PC RPG mag. (more like PC FPS mag but thats just the chip on my shoulder :D)

Totally agree with you there Surfer. Oblivion I thought was overrated. I didnt like its progressive difficulty based on your level. I prefer to put the hours in knowing that as I levelled I would be able to come back to enemies that could easily beat me at the start off. (A bit like Morrorwind)

ps official link to patch is http://www.thewitcher.com/registration/en/www/patch.html

I am a stuck record when it comes to Oblivion, but I just can't help myself. To RPG's it's like what Titanic was to movies. Almost everyone raved about it at the time but with passing years as the shiny graphics wear off and its vacuousness is exposed, we will be all saying what the heck seven Oscars for that.

Damn, just finished the game. Safe to say my favorite game of all time. The final sequence is really amazing, especially if you have no-lifed the game for a whole week and done every quest like me and have become an unstoppable powerhouse. The end certainly does the game justice and I'd like to wager the Pcz reviewer never got that far... such an epic story!

My only criticisms are that maybe some of the boss battles trhoughout the game were a little easy, but if you have completed every optional quest and are only playing on medium I guess that's to be expected. Apart from that.. pretty much my idea of a perfect game :).

i finished yesterday, mused over story, felt like i'd watched a film of sorts and then restarted last night without thinking about modding  for me that's the sign of a quality game..

Wow, grabbed this yesterday after reading the thread and bar a few hours to sleep this has swallowed my weekend so far. Still in the first main city and trying to do every quest I can... apart from the one I just failed because of my previous actions resulting in a guy getting shot.

Not been hooked like this since I first played KOTOR. :D

Oblivion over this game!!!! LOL!!!

Like the guy stated above, was good at first but just doesn't stack up nowadays. the whole autolevelling thing rendered the game pointless imo.

When are the publications gonna start admiting that oblivion was just a carp game and they got it wrong. Heck when is the developer gonna admit it?????!

I have been playing it for some hours now and it is just getting better and better. I am in the big city and have done quite a few quests in there so far.

There are a few annoyances that I have encountered, like when in battle, you start attacking a monster then for some reason the attack sequence stops and Geralt just stands there dodging and parrying. To rectify this I have to jump away from the monster I am attacking to get some distance before I can attack again. Its slightly annoying but doesn't happen too often thankfully!

The game has only crashed once on me, touch wood. I have heard some people say that it crashes all the time, maybe I am just lucky.

ahh..but the trouble is you see...Oblivion looked incredible, had shiny graphics all over the place, and bump mapping and shading out of the whazoo. We all know the publications start spooging all over their desks the moment they see graphics like that, and immediately whack an extra 20% on the score

I never really liked Oblivion much to be honest..it seemed ok, but I actually found that it was SO free form and so non-linear that a lot of what I was doing just seemed pointless, I just found myself meandering around in the game for no real reason. I think they made an engine, rather than a game. But thats just my opinion. I will take the storyline and plot devices of the Witcher over the spooge graphics of Oblivion any day of the week

This is the most positive thread I have seen for a game in a long time!

One side note. For me so far this has been 100% stable. Constant crashing could be linked to overclocked or overheating components? My new 8800 gtx used to crash all the time and i used to blame nvidia drivers . It turned out the card i bought bfg oc2 which was factory clocked was the culprit. I have to knock the memory down to 975mhz or it crashes after a while. I still havnt got round to getting it swapped

ps i do hope this title gets the recognition (and sales) that it deserves so they do a sequel. Especiallty
as they havnt done a console version and put the PC first. The production values must have cost them a fortune.

Obilvion is a good game, no doubt about it. There's a few mods out there that make it really good, but after playing The Witcher I don't rate nearly anywhere near as good. The Witcher's story is much more immersing, I'm loving it to bits, just running around randomly and hearing an NPC speak profanities, cant beat it.

I just cannot wait for the patches to fix the load times, they're surely inc.

Exactly. Apparently this is freedom - being to do what you like in a dull lifeless boring world lol

Give me The Witcher's rich story and structure any day.

Heh you should see them over at rpgcodex....

for the love of all that is sane.
Chapter 2 *spoiler*
what do you do to activate the golem in the middle of the swamp so i can beat him and get a stone? driving me slowly insane walking round that swamp.

Playing Oblivion felt like doodling, whatever you were doing was of no real importance. Freedom to do nothing.

Loving the game thus far, has to be the best game ive played this year. Crysis and UT3 watch out this could take the title for GOTY. Even though I have copies of the above coming to me within the next 12 days I can see this eating up most of my time :).
