The Witcher - worth playing?

Bit of an odd one this. I love the books but really didn't get into the game at all. I'm in Vizima at the moment and just found it dragging massively, a lot of the quests are just "bring 10 pelts here" and even the story ones aren't that great. Oh and there are loading screens.....a lot of loading screens.

I'm trying to get through it as I'm quite looking forward to the second one but I think the first one gets more praise than it should, perhaps because it had so little hype or something.

Are you playing the enhanced version? The loading screens werent an issue after that patch as they came and went very fast. They were a pain before though. I didnt find many 'bring x amount of y' quests to be honest apart from the odd side quest, although im remembering more from later on when you arent dealing with peasants wanting bread as much. It does pick up and get better and better but if you arent enjoying it yet then it just might not be for you.

For me the praise it gets is because it doesnt go by the happy elf land fairytale rules. It has an adult world which has it happy and dark sides. Theres no wizard telling you who is good/bad. You make choices, the characters are likeable, its challenging, the world is nice and interesting, the story is good, the atmosphere is great. The only fault I found was most of the stats and potions were more an addition than a necessity.

I tried the demo, and the voice acting/combat is pretty poor imo. I prefer Dragon Age.

The demo is the original one, The Witcher Enhanced is far better.

I recently (finally) completed the game. I found it quite difficult to get into at first, I think it's because I made the mistake of expecting something more along the lines of Dragon Age with loads of armours and items.

The story is brilliant, gameplay is fantastic. Definitely worth a play.

I just hope i dont have to bother with skills or any item messing about too much and just play the game. I dont usually like fantasy games anymore as their getting too complex with stats and magic and crafting and crap. Gimme a sword or fireball and im happy with that lol.

The best experience of fantasy games was Dungeon Siege i loved the whole leveling by just using the weapon a lot. Found that simplistic leveling and fun but not too complex gameplay a joy. I hope its somewhat like DS compared to NWN or DA.

You don't have to bother with messing around with skills and items much at all. The most you have to do is put on your Witcher silver sword and your steel sword and spend some points on skills.

You can get into potion crafting and particular character builds, but you really don't need to at all.

That's actually the reason I struggled to get into The Witcher, it doesn't have as much character development as the RPGs I'm used to. I usually spend hours going through my inventory searching for that 'slightly better' weapon, or new armour & refining, etc.

I presume it is fully voiced, i think it was pretty well voiced in the demo i tried ages ago but their is one thing i loath in rpg games is reading text.
Yes its fully voiced. Do make sure you have got the enhanced edition though - the enhanced patch is free from the devs website for anyone who has the basic version.

i think the game is great but i really didnt like combat system of the game i think some people might agree on that to. i played only for an hour so might be better further on.

I didn't like it either.
Didn't much like the combat system, but it wasn't that that put me off the game.
I found the initial part of the story uninteresting (and unoriginal, but it's not the only game that suffers from that).
I think what annoyed me about the game is that you seemingly have to randomly wonder around hoping you bump into something to allow you to progress. I needed to kill x number of y, except I couldn't see y because I hadn't read the book about them. So I had to find some way to get the book. I think you could buy it, but I couldn't afford it and I had no intention of arsing about trying to earn the money (I seem to remember that it seemed expensive for that point in the game).

I think i just prefer a little more direction in my games (which some people consider to be 'on rails') like in Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, KOTOR and what I've played so far of Dragon Age. Also, I have lots of games to play, so when somethign starts off slowly i lose interest quickly.

Been trying the game. I have a very short attention span so them vids at start and the non stop tutorial more or less was very tiring for me and was a strugle to get it over and done with. Saying that the gfx are nice, voices are good but damn. You know the chick triss how low are her boobs :p nice boobs but far too low and look horid cos of position. :p I guess devs never seen a womens boobs before. :D

Animation like lipsync and expressions are lacking a bit and walkin sometimes in cutscenes look forced.

Had to force vsync in nvidia panel as got tearing. At max detail and multisampling aa its not too bad.

The controls i hate. I like the close camera but i hate that the mouse isnt independent so you have to face to click on ppl to fight and stuff which i hate and would have prefered a free mouse cursor in that view. The other views are ok and has free mouse but with me depending on rotating the camera with right mouse button held and move mouse to move camera isnt in the game and u need to hold middle mouse button which is weird for me makes them views awkard too.

I wonder if a mod is out there that can fix the camera issues in isometric views or enable free mouse in oversholder view. Are their any?

Just saved and having a break at the point where leo died and the guy with glasses in the lab killed him. That whole leveling system is horrible to use, the devs favoured gfx icons and fancy systems over simple systems with text like other games. So im not a fan of that talents crap stuff.
