*** The World Athletics Championships 2015 Thread ***

I think I saw a few weeks ago that Darren Campbell said he wants Gatlin to win the 100m, just so that governing bodies are forced to deal with drugs cheats once and for all.

I've got to agree with that, and I'd still go along with that even if Bolt was in good shape and contention. As it is, it's likely going to be a comfortable victory for Gatlin.

On a brighter note, really pleased for Mo and Jess, fantastic performances. :D

World champs 100 metre final

Fair play to Bolt

Didn't have him beating gatlin on current form, gatlin has been exceptional this year but he buckled when bolt was with him with 30 to go

Yeah, tbh, they should never have been allowed to run again, should have been perma bans. Makes you wonder if doping in any way permanently changes muscle strength/structure to give them an advantage even when they've stopped taking drugs, i.e, is Gatlin's sub 9.8 times due to that. I mean he looks older than Bolt, and Bolt is struggling to get anywhere near sub 9.8, let alone his own PB of sub 9.6.

There have been some studies done on the long term effects of doping, it does appear as if there can be lasting effects but it depends on the drugs and they're not necessarily all positive in a health sense longer term. However for what you're presumably talking about (increased strength/speed for races) then it seems as if taking drugs early in the career can benefit later on when other athletes are hitting natural barriers and diminishing abilities. BBC article about University of Oslo study on the lasting benefits.

However I should say that I'm far from an expert on this and it's probably well beyond my abilities to understand fully, it seems plausible that it could benefit drug cheats for many years in a pure sporting sense but it does also seem like it can increase the risks for ill-health later in life as the body has been stressed well beyond what it could otherwise be (c.f. the number of wrestlers who die comparatively young).

Out of interest how do you reconcile that Bolt has run faster than 4 known dopers? Hard to understand in my mind.

He might just be a genetic freak (for want of a better phrase) with physiology that is well suited to the event. Before Bolt it appeared that most of the successful sprinters were 6' or under (albeit I've not done any real research in this area) and much stockier - he's 6'5" so presuming he could get similar foot speed etc it wouldn't seem unreasonable for that additional stride length to benefit him.

However maybe he has just been cheating and he's better at it than the others. I hope that's not true but it's got to be considered as a possibility.

Anyway, in the meantime congratulations to Usain and to Jess Ennis-Hill for their wins today. Great performances by both.

Had to go to a wedding so didn't see the final until just now on iplayer.

Wow! The right result wins through  Makes you wonder if Bolt was sandbagging all along. He was only barely getting sub 10 in the heats and semi final, let alone 9.79. Good win though. By just 100th of a second! :D

And almost as amazing is that neither Powell, Gay and Vicaut got bronze place AND they didn't even get sub 10. It really is amazing how pressure brings out both the best and the worst in athletes.

Powell's always choked on the biggest stage, Gay hasn't been the same since he stopped doping (only 0.1 to 0.2 slower but that's enough) and it Vicaut's first World Championships so hardly surprising he didn't perform as well as he has. He's still very young and has got a very bright future ahead of him though, should dominate the European events with ease :)

Bromell looks like a threat for the future, as does De Grasse and The Beast is yet to return from injury. Next years Olympics could be epic.

Yep, Bromell looks ike the new kid on the block (or even off the block :p), only 19 or 20, could well be a future world and/or olympic champion. I forgot all about Yohan Blake, yeah, he's good.

Just seen Molly Huddle's disappointment of missing out on bronze in the 10km. She's only got herself to blame for that for not running to the line.

It's one thing to falter when the line is near, but to just assume no one is behind, slow down and celebrate before the line, that's just silly. Surely that should be drilled into these runners?

Always run to the line!
