The Worst Official Controller

Ps1 and ps2 pad were great and the pad I hate most is the 360 pad as I never use analogue sticks on any controller and the D pad is the worst quality I have ever seen.

Dreamcast. I know it was the forefather of the excellent 360 controller, but I think it felt cheap and terrible in the hand.

For my the huge ass xbox pad was the worst, closely followed by the NES and the playstation controllers after the shoved analog in there

My least favorite was and still is the Sony Dualshock. Adapting a SNES-style controller to have analog sticks was an OK idea at first but they botched the placement. The sticks are too low for a natural hand position. They've kept with this same lousy design for nigh on a decade now. They really, really, really, need to swap the buttons and the sticks.

I've never had trouble with any controller in all my years of gaming (blimey - now over 20 years ), except for the times that I've tried to 'get on' with an original XBox pad. The least ergonomic, most malformed lump of plastic crapness ever to be held by human hands.

Has to be the original side wired Master system pad. To be fair they changed it pretty quick to having the wire come out the top but i have the original with the wire coming out the side. Made it very uncomfortable to use.

Standard controllers
The Master System's controller was very similar to that of the NES.

The Master System controller has only 2 buttons, one of which additionally performs the function of the traditional "Start" button; the pause button is on the game console itself. The original controllers, like Sega's previous systems, has the cord emerging from the side; during 1987 the design was changed to the now-typical top emerging cord. Some controllers also include a screw-in thumb stick for the D-pad.

wow, I have never seen one of those before
That would be horrible to use since your hand should cover the side!!

you do start to wonder how it ever got out of R&D. Still got my master system somewhere. Even have a few of the card games (opposed to cartridges the original MS could also take carts which were credit card sized). Hmm wonder if they are worth anything on the bay.

The only controller i've ever used that actually caused pain was the PSP... if that counts!

Nothing wrong with any other pad i've used, although the PS3 pad feels a tad tacky.

No one has mentioned the Power Glove yet.

Ok it may be the coolest controller ever made (actually, I'm now thinking of buying one - if one can be found)
But lets be honest when it came to controlling games it was useless,

Oh and what about the SNES Super Scope (the Bazooka)... hmmm in fairness again quite cool. But a bit unwieldy.

But the PSP has to be the worst in terms of pain and ergonomics GTA was pure torture to play due to the claw shape I had to make with my hand

Hand-span 21.5cm

all things considering i'd go for the ps1/2/3 controller, when it originally came out i thought the design was quite good, being about 8 the controller fit my hands well, much better than the much clunkier N64 controller which i found hard to use, and obviously better that some of the other offering of the time, and previously.

Even on the PS2 it wasn't terrible, the continued design bought a bit of familiarity, the constant layout made it easy to get to grips with having been using the controller for the last 4 years anyway, and it was still better than the majority of the competition. but on the horizon was the Xbox (or the black beast :p), the initial design of the controller was perplexing, what with being so large and having an analogue stick in the wrong place (not to mention 'R1'/'L1' being 'black' and 'white' in an odd place) but this controller was quickly revised to cater for the small handed japanese (why have big hands if one of the things they're most useful for is so small after all?) the 's' version of controller was just about perfect, by then my hands were much bigger (obviously not being 8 any more, but closer to 13/14) and the fit was near perfect My thumbs, having been horridly contorted on the DS2 now found a much happier home at more muscle friendly angles and my gaming improved, no longer did i have to endure the tedious cramps induced by a 2+ hour session on the PS1/2, i could cheerfully play all day (if i could divert the call of nature and hold it in long enough).

then came the Xbox 360 controller, sticking with it's winning design it made only 1 major revision, shifting black and white to the R1/L1 positions of the DS1/2 controller, a good, sound move. Sony would have to do something to remedy their poor controller design, now only with 2 major competitors they needed something to match the winning controller designs of Microsoft and Nintendo, a drastic change was needed to win over comfortable hand lovers everywhere and so they designed the boomerang, horrible looking and still poorly laid out they realised it would not be received well, and so, sticking to the tried and true method they returned to the old ways.

however removing the one thing that made the DS2 controller good (the DS bit!!!) they proceeded put a motion sensor inside the controller, poorly implemented and absent form many games this proved to be a pointless feature and many wished to see the DS return.

and so, Sony, taking a controller 12 years old, and at least 6 years out of date managed to make a bad design worse. ignoring calls for a more ergonomic controller they simply re-did what they knew. poor ergonomics, bad size, awful blind spots, sloping triggers make it impossible to stay on the ball in heavy gaming sessions, a lack of dual shock made games more 2D, no longer feeling the effects of a grenade going off at your feet, or crashing in to a barrier at 150MPH.

and that is why sony's is the worst, knowing it's out of date. failing to re-design to any meaningful extent, ignoring pleas of fans and refusing to adapt and then to top it all off taking away what few good features it had left.

TLDR? sonys controller sucks

I prefer the PlayStation pad to the 360. Ive got the 360 pad for my pc and i agree for some games its far better. But as an alrounder (maybe due to being something I've got used too) i much prefer the ps3 pad. I did also prefer the Snes pad to the Mega drive. Hated the yellow stick on the gamecube. Though i will say that game cube pad felt comfortable. If they could use that shell with the ps3 button layout i would be very happy. Steal the triggers from the 360 too (ive got trigger extentions on my ps3 pad but actual triggers would be better).
