***There are jobs here***

I think that also degrees are not as impressive as they used to be because of the amount of people that have them now and everyone getting student loans and doing degrees etc.

True, that's why if you're looking to specialise in an area or focused learning in the Science and Engineering field, a degree makes sense - along with other degree needed jobs like accounting, lawyers e.t.c.

The perks of a science degree is versitility, as it dabbles in maths, stats, analysis and depending on the fields, it can easily cross over to other areas.

e.g. I grad BSc Pharmaceutical Science - 2:1, didn't touch a single bit of Pharmaceuticals since I graduated. Fell into the world of Food Industry and now works for Haribo developing new products for them. Got there through experience and my degree cross enough over to Food Science despite all I cooked at Uni was mostly inorganic materials.

Your media degree might have been broad but if you don't have specific focus, there's always Masters that allows you to stretch your media degree abit further e.g. focus on Business with your media degree and then perhaps look at Marketing and commercial sales?

Get yourself on Linkedin and make yourself known to local recruiters in the job sector of interest, i.e. Electrician. Whilst that is happening, try calling around different builders / contractors / local factories that may want the odd help (if lucky, someone actually looking to hire but no budget to advertise giving you a chance).

There are may factories that subcontact their maintainence jobs, but on the other side of the coin, there are also those who hire a team to do everything on site. Nothing is stopping you to going for a 'new job fuly qualified' as long as they're happy to take you under their wing.

Good luck!

I don't understand why so many "junior" tech/engineering jobs all say that a degree is essential. I would that thought that if I had a degree I wouldn't be applying for £15-20K junior positions or is that just how the job market is now-a-days?

I'm soon to be leaving my engineering job of 19 years with only a BTEC ONC so constantly seeing "degree essential" for jobs that are extremely simple must be hugely under-valuing for graduates.

It's the trend but it's not a must. If your experience can cover the need for a degree understanding, a lot of places use it as a barrier.

Oh you know, just something with prospects, purpose and a sense of dignity.

Just from an insider point of view of Haribo: we have a new site opening end 2015 - we have double figure %age growth year on year (despite recession).

This entry job role was previously filled by a close colleague and from this "repetitive, degrading or menial" job, within 2 years, he has side step within the company, into a FT office position, higher pay / position and more potential prospect if he decides to leave - not that he will yet.

Haribo is rather unique and a lot of internal promotions and essentially, entry or whatever job you enter, it's what you make of it and push yourself towards whatever role you prefer.

We have factory staff now in IT and purchasing despite no experience, but the company gave the opportunity and training. So 'entry' job isn't all bad if the company is good.
