Thief

Only into the first couple of chapters but mixed feelings. I want to like this game and I have to keep telling myself it's not Deus Ex HR! This is the first Thief game I've played, guess I should have read up a bit more but I find the setting - a kind of pre-industrial late 18th century but where houses have central heating radiators and electric lighting...odd.

It's also quite frustrating, based on what I've seen so far, to have to spend the entire game stealthing everywhere. When not on a mission or even going too or from a job, it should be possible to walk around without having to evade or knock out/kill every city guard you encounter.

I guess from my point of view, "burglary" makes for an interesting side game in GTA or Skyrim etc. but it's a bit specialised to sustain interest for an entire full game.

Will report back when I've seen a bit more but at the moment I'm going with 3 stars (out of 5).

Garret does look just a little bit shifty to say the least... I would be more surprised if he was allowed to walk around looking like that without suspicion tbh!

I haven't played the game yet, but if Garrett is as some say, a well built muscular fellow, then my D&D / AD&D days would suggest he would be more suited to a fighter class - and one that doesn't use a blackjack. :D

Well, I was going to play this yesterday - but my Pc keeps BSODing every couple of minutes. Still trying to figure out whats wrong.

I'm currently at chapter 2. I'm a little unsure about this game. I feel a little as though I'm being rushed through it. The exploration as it were seems a little like an unimpressive afterthought, with singular rooms and nothing but a couple of trinkets. Not even anybody to avoid.

Making good use of your arsenal makes for some interesting antics though. Firing a smoke arrow then darting past and leaping over the nearest ledge makes you feel like a skilled ninja :D. But I'm still feeling a little underwhelmed so far. The mish-mash opening hasn't done the game any favours.

I have felt the old games creeping through on a couple of occasions though with the atmosphere, which is a good thing.

Never had a BSOD on my PC, got two yesterday so I'm concluding it's a program bug.

This is the first game I've played on launch for over 10 years and this is the reason in the past i don't.

Got a few levels in. Only collected one collectible.

tbh I keep thinking it's dishonored rather than Thief.

The game does get better and start to feel like the old Thief as you get further in. The early maps are kinda small and full of annoying cutscenes. I'm playing it on master difficulty with focus and most of the HUD switched off, which makes traps and puzzles MUCH more challenging (also guards can kill you in 2 hits).

I think I prefered the lore and weird mix of magic and machinery from the old Thief though. Also there is no real melee combat like before, no sword/dagger or blocking so if you get spotted you basically have to leg it, or shoot them in the face (literally in the face, because arrows ping off guard's helmets and armour!). It isn't as creepy as old Thief either.

Other than that it's good :)

Sorry, non-game related BSOD. I'm thinking it's a memory error so going to be running memtest when I get home.

Yeah I think they should have made Garret really slim. Not some well built muscled action hero as is the current trend.
I dunno... Half that bulk is probably that leather armour. The other half would be muscle, which he would quite reasonably have if he spends his life hauling himself up buildings and running around rooftops. He's an athlete.

I'm struggling to get into this as well. It holds my hand too much and sorely needs Stephen Russell. The new guy's accent seems to switch betwen Mid-Atlantic and Noo Yoick Cabbie...!!

The voice actor for Garratt sounds (to me) eerily like Mel Gibson!

Will be pushing on with Chapter 2 later when I get in from work, got stuck last night after killing one/knocking out another guard in the factory but now have two more to deal with and no obvious means of stealthing past.

Another slight annoyance is, so far as I can tell, no health regen after taking damage and there's little in the way of food etc. in the levels to replenish your health. You have just about enough health to take down two guards (if they spot you and fight) but that puts you on about 5% left. Not the best game design - either you have a regen system or strategically placed health items to get you through (within reason), hardly any at all is unacceptable.

Naa regening health is a bad thing and makes games to easy. In Thief your supposed to avoid fighting, even more so in this one than in the old ones. You don't even get a proper melee weapon this time :)

I was always great at fighting in the old ones, to the point where I didn't have to worry about sneaking - With this one and the new Dodge Attack ability, I can take down up to five guards before I kark it :D

Chapter 5+ headphones, in the dark at 2 in the morning = very nearly new trousers required!...only just started chapter 5, but gonna leave the rest for later. Wasn't thrilled about the latter half of chapter 4 tbh. The worst bit of the game yet imo. Done a fair few side missions as well. I really like Vittori's jobs, and the engineer guy. Probably Thief at its most classic.

13 hours in and still really enjoying it!

I'm part way through the game but have yet to get a sword although all the cutscenes show me with two, is there a way to get a sword because you can't pick one up off a fallen enemy
