How is that different from Dave for David or Mike for Michael, though? Name shortening is pretty ubiquitous in UK culture, especially when you're young. Long names are for working professional environments. We took great pains to name our spawn with something that could work for all ages and situations.
At least they're not calling themselves Char-Lo, K-Lo and Y-Lo, or 'Zee-to-tha-Oey'...!!

Personally, I feel that there’s a world of difference, Dave, Mike or Mick, Bob for Robert, Dan or Danny for Daniel, even extensions, like Frankie for Frank, are well known, accepted, and in common use.
To me, Charlie is fine for Charles, but not Char for Charlie, Kelly and Zöe are nice names too, and IMO shouldn’t be shortened, what’s next, Clo for Chloe ?, although it’s Chloë to me.
