Things to buy in Thailand..... (and general prices)

when on beach you got to try the spicy papaya salad and barbecued chicken with sticky rice....look out for the old ladies walking along beach balancing the cooking gear/ food on there shoulders.

also barbecue sweetcorn very good and banana or cocounut milk shake.

Since you're going to Thailand, you'll probably want to bring back 10 kilos of heroin. They're quite lax with drug trafficking sentences. ;) so no big deal if you get caught. :p

worth getting hold of a copy of the lonely planet guide to thailand (even for a short stay)

it's got lots of useful info on thailand where to stay local customs etc.

you may be able to borrow a copy from your library.

Thanks for that, will have a look.

Stayed at Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui for 8 days in May last year, hotel was right next to the beach.
Absolutely cracking place. Traditional Thai food is cheap. Thai beer is cheap too, start drinking vodka and the likes and the prices go up. Sam Song is very cheap also.
Thai people are lovely. Shopping is actually fun out there, bartering and such.
I would recommend doing some scuba diving or snorkeling, nothing like swimming with the fishies, Koh Phangan is good for this.

If your there when there is a full moon party, go, its fantastic, and if you can drink Sam Song buckets all night your laughing, think I paid £2ish for a bucket, absolute bargain.

Also, for a day out, go visit Angthong National Marine Park. Visually stunning, you can actually stay on one of the islands, although I don't think you have electricity 24 hours a day. Choose who you go with carefully, as some boats are big old and slow. Try and go with someone who has a nice big speedboat.

Hope you enjoy Thailand as much as I did, can't wait for a return trip.

Cheers

Sunny Camera on Silom if you're after Nikon digital camera gear. Close to Sala Daeng skytrain station. They make Nikon cameras (not all models) in Thailand. I picked up my D70 there.

Other places to look would be MBK plaza (Sian Square skytrain station) and Panthip Plaza. Panthip is basically a computer plaza but plenty of digital camera stuff.

When in bankok or main city try and find what passes for a hypermarket they have all sorts of bargains in houshold goods ect.

Imitation silk shirts watches etc are also cheap bargains.

Biggest tip get up early and try and be the first customer its traditional good luck for them to sell cheaply in return for good custom the rest of the day!

Ok, thanks. What are the prices like?

Was in Bangkok last year and tried MBK ....the prices are not really any more cheaper than the well known UK auction sites (and I doubt you will get any warrenty on the goods)

I bought a router / Wireless card there, and could never get them to work properly.

MBK is a waste of time for computer stuff, Panthip Plaza is the place for that. The only electronic stuff worth looking at in MBK are cameras and mobile phones.
