Things we got for Christmas

I have a bucket load of cash fella but don't volunteer this info on a public forum. Money does not make a person but the fact you make out your loaded makes me think you are trying to emulate someone you are not. Sorry.

He's suddenly received £10k and states that he's never had that much money before. How on earth is that acting like he's loaded?

Now if he said he received £10k, but it's no big deal as £10k is pennies to him, then yeah, he's acting as if he's loaded. He didn't, however.

You're obsessed with people doing a masters.

I think the guy should go out and treat himself to something fun and exciting, I'd go for a [sensible] car and insurance and then put the rest away. Maybe spend 3 or 4 grand on the car and insurance and save the rest.

It's just a really easy, obvious example, that's not the easiest thing to fund (career development loans being a bit lame) :'(. If he's planning on going to uni, would a car be a great move? (Can't remember if he mentioned uni). Obviously if he's not, then yeah, it could be a good move (as I said there can be legit reasons for doing so) - personally I wouldn't, because public transports actually alright at home/home uni/Helsinki.

I'm not really aware of the costs of Masters because every single person I know who has done one or is doing one didn't pay for it so maybe that's why I don't really understand your view.

I'd say that he needs to strike the balance of being careful with the money but also having some fun with it whilst he can.

How are they funded in Scotland, out of interest?

Through SAAS (Student Awards Agency for Scotland), the same body that pays for our undergraduate fees. Most people I know who have done a Masters applied for the Masters when they originally applied for their undergrad and the course changed in the 3rd year for those on the Master course.

People who have gone back afterwards have either been funded through SAAS, the University has paid for them or an employer has done so but the first example is by and large the most common.

Also, some Universities are permitted to award a Master of Arts degree for a undergraduate degree course which blurs the distinction.
