Think! Take longer to look for bikes.

Anyone remember the last ad campaign? With the guy turning right and knocking the motorcyclist over?

I wrote to them about it and printed the resulting response here. They were saying they weren't apportioning blame.

No, didn't look like it either.

I think Luke meant he doesn't just have his side lights on, but dipped beam too. If not, and he did mean full beam then yes I agree it's a bit annoying ;)

Holy guacamole, Batman! An advert that levels a justifiable finger at motorists!

It is a very nicely (?!) done advert that - judging by the responses above - rings both home and true with a lot of you. I've had a similar experience with a cyclist (although she was coming the wrong way down a one way street behind a bank of cars) and it panicked me regardless of the fact that the cyclist was being silly.

So many motorists drive around with their foglights on when the nights are perfectly clear... IMNSHO, that is a lot more irritating.

There will always be idiots on either side of the fence, regardless of how many adverts are put on the telly. Numbskulls on bikes, BMW drivers, people without licenses or insurance, inconsiderate people... the list goes on. The DVLA driving test should be a lot harder, IMHO.

I remember that.

I think in this ad, it's a clear message of being weary of each other and sharing the road with each other carefully, and just being careful. I don't think it's supposed to put the blame on the driver - I certainly don't see it that way.

It's pretty clear it's just making a shock tactic, hence the "missing" rider at the beggining of the clip. It's just to accentuate the fact that you "could" have missed seeing him if you hadn't looked carefully enough. It's supposed to be sobering - I think it works well.

Oh I don't think this ad suffers the same way the old one did. Must've sacked the old ad creators after I complained :p

Correct, I didnt mean my full beam, just the dipped headlights.

I think most bikers worth their salt have their headlights on really. It's foolish not to, certainly if it helps you be seen.

Being as I only put my full beam on when I am around a driver who I can see isn't paying attention I'm guessing other bikers must do the same. Maybe says something about your driving?

Some people i have noticed driving have enough of a hard time to notice cars, let alone bikes. If i got a bike i would be tempted to go round with diped lights on, also find the brightest leathers ever so you can see me easier.

*snip#1...* There's this theory that "motion camouflage" can actually render you invisible or hard to see to a driver when you're coming towards them. I tend to do very gentle s-turns to try and break this motion camouflage and basically make my headlamp move a little to try and make sure the driver has seen me. I only commit when I make eye contact or when I'm sure I've been seen.

*...and snip#2*
Now this is interesting because a bike instructor once told me about this and why it happens. You normally find this only happens to a driver once, ie they only get the motion blindness the first time the driver is in the situation. It's something to do with the way the subconcious brain recognises a hazzard and deals with it the first time it experiences that hazzard, but normally the result is the driver pulls out anyway. Once the hazzard has been dealt with that first time the driver doesn't pull out without thinking about it again. You will find that many people have this hazzard perception built in and won't end up in the above situation, but this is normally when that person is either a biker or knows a biker. Men know more bikers than women do which explains to a point why you get a lot of women drivers that 'don't look'. It's not that they haven't looked, it's more that they haven't been in the situation before and their subconcious reaction takes over.

Now onto the subject of lights. Bikers, did you know that drivers can misjudge your speed by +/- 15mph when you have your light on? Just one to think about when you are approaching a car at a side turning.

How does that happen?

that advert is retarded, the biker isnt there the first time he looks, the double take he magically is. pluss, it looked like he was going far to fast.

How is it retarded? They don't put him in the first frames to make a point. The point is, did you really look carefully enough?

As for going too fast? Nope, he looks like he was doing around 30 to me.

Thank you :)

I always show my appreciation for people who do this with a quick thumbs up to them, hopefully they will be happy that I thanked them and do the same in the future for another biker. You always get the ones who do the opposite and move out to the right a bit more.
