Thinking about getting a Golf GT

i have also sat in over 1000 cars, i know what a good car is, im only 22 do you expect me to have driven a million cars by now??? and what has the Uk have to do with it, are you telling me driving abroad doesn't count???

well at 18, I 've driven the following cars:
vauxhall cavalier
vauxhall corsa
peugeot 306 convertible
peugeot 106
rover 25
Citroen c2
Renault clio
vw golf
vw touareg - And the moral of the story is that...

It was awesome! :p but I haven't driven anything that's even a close comparison to this beast it was a v6 3l tdi in silver
:D And I wouldn't be in the belief that it's best car in it's class as I have driven nothing to compare it to.

I've sat in 1 million cars, I just counted them all up.................kind of annoyed they were all Trabants, but someones got to drive them onto the ship.

what i dont like second hand stuff so that makes me have a bad mindset???

just because i aim higher than most people my age??

you do have a bad mindset. a ridiculous one at that! you dont aim higher than people your own age! i am your age, but the difference is i understand monetary concepts!

my parents could afford to get me a new car if i wanted one, but why would i want to waste money on getting a brand new car, when you can get one a few years old or even a year old for far less money?! where is the logic?

EDIT i dont actually get my parents do buy me cars and stuff

And if you want to aim higher why settle for a Volkswagen Golf when the same money gets you a used Audi A3? ;)

You know the Golf TDI? Well there is the possibility of a 140 bhp and a 170 bhp version, honest you should check it out!!

So as you can see from the following text

That's me *waves*, giving the opinion that the 170bhp version is NOT the one to go for. Would you like a definition of the word NOT?

So now we are down to this bit, what this means is you can get the same power as the 170 through a remap of the 140. However you still get the fuel economy, in the 170 the fuel economy is not impressive for the power gain over the 140, hence; fails.

So this bit means that if you get a remap on a 170 it often causes problems.

Understand or me still speakka no de engleeesh?

Btw OP: What exactly are you looking for in a car? fuel economy? looks?

Well done!!! Your grade based on your ability to speak English and communicate in a way that allows a reasonable percentage of the population in England to understand you, has now improved from an E- to B-

Just a shame you didn't explain why a remap on a 170bhp TDI supposedly causes problems, what those problems might be, or point to any evidence to support what you're saying, given that you've never owned or driven a 140bhp car, a remapped 140bhp, 170bhp car, AND a remapped 170bhp with problems in order to be able to compare them or calculate their comparative fuel enonomy :p

might be aiming higher with your car aspect but your financial aspect are not as high, soon as you drive that nice new car off the forecourt, it loses a nice wedge of its value, my opinion for what its worth is to go for something not brand spanking new but something not old, that why you save money and the guy/gal that bought the car first takes the deprecation of the cars value

lol true
Out of interest would a mondeo st tdci be a better purchase? what positives does the VW have over the Ford?

Many people would consider buying an older but better car as aiming higher, rather then only buying brand new.

As for VWs, I've driven the 2l Passat TDi (170) and an Octavia 1.9 TDI (current model so basicaly a MK5 golf). Both good cars, both bloody boring. After a day of two back in my regular bangers I wasn't yearning to be back in a brand new VW.

As for economy, I think the Octavia was quite economical (it was a holiday hire car, so it's dificult to get an accurate impression due to different currencies, fuel prices etc.). For the sort of bendy A road/ urbanish driving that makes up my commute the Passat didn;t use any less fuel then my 2 litre Chystler Neon, although I'd expect it would use a lot less fuel cruising on the motorway.

Why don't you tell use a bit more about why you like the Golf.

And hey, go test drive a 5 year old 5 series, you've got nothing to lose having a go in one. I've test driven a Pug 107 despite the the fact I wouldn't buy one even if Satan does ice skate to work.

18k on a Golf shopping trolly?

Would look at a Focus ST, or Civic Type R for that money.

Honestly cant understand why VW are so revered when you have the Jap cars built like tanks.

Residually the Mondeo ST TDCi would be a poor buy right now - it's a discontinued model which was replaced a year ago by the all new Mondeo, and around about now there are floods of used ST TDCi's coming onto the market at 3 yeards old as it was a hugely popular company car choice. This is knocking used values.

So, a great car to buy for £10k or less but not for £18k.

This made me laugh quite a lot.

The glass falling out and back into the door has happened on both my old Rover 214 and my sisters Renault Clio (2001), so its not restricted to just Golfs. Its just where manufacturers have tried to save 20p a car and used rubbish bits.

Wow this thread became a monster.. I appreciate people idea's and the opinions about what 18k can buy you etc (incidentally, that figure was not mentioned by me.) What generally happens is people tend to favour the cars they like and drive themselves, which is natural of coarse.

People have suggested BMW's, Fords, even Lotus and Evo's!!! From the thread title I think its fairly obvious that I want a conservative styled oil burner. Suggestions such as the A3 the 1 or 3 Series BMW would probably and have been more appropriate. Those who suggested those models I appreciate your input. I appreciate those who suggested the Jap cars too, but they don't interest me.

There are some valid points regarding the purchase of a second hand car over a new one and I'm certainly not ruling that out.. the stigma that was mentioned about owning a second hand motor is something that (up until mentioned here) I was not aware of. I have owned a few second hand cars as I have owned a few new cars. I will say that there are circumstances that it can be more financially favourable to buy new over used..but maybe not in the case of this car.

It would have been nice to hear from other Golf owners, but I have found another forum that has answered any queries I had...again thanks for your input

On a forum like this you will generally get more general opinions than specific ones :)

Personally I'd have a used A4 or 3 Series over a Golf for £18k.
