Thinking of getting a cat, some advice?

if you are getting a cat for indoors and working all day i would get 2 so they can play with each other etc :)

Agreed.

Also, for those who cats that roam outside - have you done this with pedigree cats or just moggies?

For the record, if I let my 2 cats roam outside, they would definitely get stolen in less than a week.

In general, exotic cats shouldnt be left to roam the roads, which is the reason why you hardly ever see pedigree cats on the street. Some (pedigree) breeders won't sell you a cat if you intend to let it roam the streets.

I remember Makunouchi let his 2 pedigree (Maine ****) cats outside, however, he explained that he lived in a very rural area and that if he was living in a city-type area, then he wouldn't let them outside.

If you intend to get a moggie (or 2), then I don't see why you should keep the cat(s) indoors. Get a cat-flap and let it/them roam.

I have 5 cats, all indoor cats as we live in a 2nd floor flat. The cats are all great and dont seem to be that bothered by being indoors. I sometimes leave the front door open and the furthest they go is on the landing. The only downside is as they don't go out there is a lot of cat hair, which I get my missus to clean up :p

Flicked through and saw a random question regarding indoor cats.

My parents cat is an indoors cat and he's perfectly fine. He was bread that way though - he's a Persian. He only goes outdoors for a bit each day down the side of the house but generally he doesn't really like it and just prefers to be curled up inside :).

Primary reason why I don't let my Bengals out.

Seems like there is no correct way, just fanboys for both indoor and outdoor. I may as well have went to consoles and asked what should I buy a PS3 or a XBOX360 lol.

For you people with indoor cats, does anyone have just 1, and how long do you leave them alone?

I can see why you want a cat... some will slate me for this but I am buying a cat or dog when I'm around 28 for decoration of my house as well as a pet.

This by no means says I will treat the animal bad, more the opposite. I would buy something like a Shar Pei or if it was a cat maybe something fairly unusual/rare (not so rare I couldn't let it out of the house).

Are there special breeds of Dog/Cat that don't shed lots of fur?

Bengal;) and great for people with allergies, Asthma.

We aren't fanboys. Indoors/outdoors - both have logical arguments for and against.

If you have moggies, then let them out.
If you have pedigrees, keep them indoors, unless you live in a rural area.

That said, both moggies and pedigrees are comfortable with being indoors and outdoors. A good looking pedigree has a good chance of getting stolen though.

Before I bought my 2nd cat, my 1st cat was sometimes left alone, indoors. He seemed to be bored, but generally would sleep while I was away and come to life, when I returned from work. Cats sleep a lot, so bare this in mind.

If you want to get a moggie, I don't see why you don't want to let it outside? What is stopping you? Or are you interested in a pedigree cat?

My parents both work so he's alone most days. He's an independent guy at the best of times anyway and will be in some cubby hole or running around madly chasing nothing but air even when you are home.

He's just like an only child - makes his own entertainment :p.

I miss him :(.

Why 28? Does something happen at the age of 28?

Do you live in London - if so which part? As London is mostly built up with lots of roads/high density shopping/residential zones, pedigree cats are more likely to get stolen.

I wouldn't have a single indoor cat if you're out most of the day. I have two indoor cats and they're fine for up to 24 hours alone, I just leave more than a days worth of food and running water (tap or fountain).

The stealing of pedigree cats seems pretty pathetic to me.

They're not worth that much in the scheme of things.

Well this is the age I assume I will have a house by (7 years from now). Might even get one if I rent/buy an apartment up there. I currently live in Surrey, but will be moving into London once I finish university for good.

I would love an Ashera cat, even though they are basically a Savannah marketed by a company :D

were cat lovers not fanboys. you have been given the advice you seeked, we arent choosing it for you. its ok whether indoor or outdoor cat depending on your situation. get 1/2 and youll be happy :p

rexehuk wtf man

indoor cats appeal to me more. My friends cat is outdoor and you rarely see it, also this house isn't in the best of areas and leaving windows open/installing a cat flap wouldn't be a great idea.

Never heard of Ashera cat:cool: how are they basically a Savannah?

Lol? What is this in relation to?

I am currently trying to defend my cars from a huge party across the road... someone just threw something sounded like it hit one of the cars. Went out to a few of them sitting on my wall and inspected the car, one of them said what's that in my back pocked? "Best not be a tool man".

:| Unrelated but need to vent!

Some people have tested some of them sold as Ashera and have actually been the Savannah breed! And Savannah is a big deal as they are illegal in some parts of the world (Some US states especially)
