Thinking of upgrading you GPU, grab a 980TI second hand seriously (secret 980Ti admiration thread)

I'd say moving to the 1070 was definitely worth the extra 120 pounds, Examples where the 1070 pulls away from the 980ti are becoming more frequent so you was lucky twice, Once in doing that upgrade and as you said now having a warranty and the other for managing to get a refund under those circumstances, I hope you gave him a good trust point if it was on the MM.

There is absolutely no scenario where the gtx 1070 will pull ahead of a gtx 980 ti unless it is some arbitrary memory-limited scenario (like using uncompressed textures in fallout 4). That's a simple fact.

Love my 980Ti...

384Bit bus and still kicks butt makes this a very viable purchase for anyone gaming at 1440P or above. Well worth a punt I say.

I have no idea why anyone would buy a used 980ti for 280 and not get a 330 quid 1070

Ok if you still have a 980ti fine but buying one now :/

Having got a new 1070 for £295 I think the warranty and extra vram is well worth the extra money.

In fact chuck in the cooler running temps and less energy used to the above and I still think the 1070 is the better buy even if it's £350

This...

I'm still happy with my 980 Ti. The 1080 is a great card but it hasn't been enough to tempt me away.

+1 moving to 2560 x 1440 165hz G-sync and won't be changing my card til Volta at least now. For me there are no games that would really take advantage of the extra power of a newer card anyways, would be a waste for me.

There are no games that take advantage of 32GB of system ram either :p

When the 1070 launched i was massivly dissapointed at the price, bought a new EVGA FTW 980ti at £390 instead, for an equivalent 1070 it was £450-500.Saved a £100 got a faster card overall.

Gotta be honest surprised at the longevity of the 980ti,still absolutely reks every game game defiantly will do for a few years at 1080/1440p,at this point i think it might have more legs than 7970/280x's and 290/x's which are still very capable cards within reason.

Anyone who bought one at launch really got a great deal

The cheapest 1070 at the time that would have warrenty with WC was an msi armour with reference pcb at £420,IMO thats not equivalent to a FTW card with more phases/better build quality and a back plate aswell as warranty. Those started at £450

Edit:Its worth point out i came from an MSI 970so the value seemed terriable for a new range of cards.I massively regret not just buying a 980ti a at launch after considering how 1070 launch prices/performance was.

Also my card booted to 1430mhz on air out the box :D

Not really because most reviewers never did game runs with the 980Ti overclocked to its potential. Only pauls hardware did one where the 980Ti was overclocked to 1420 and the 1070 to 2ghz. The 980Ti was faster in every game and it was a reference 980Ti which are known to throttle. The 1070 was a aftermarket MSI Gaming X so even the 980Ti had a handicap. Most 980Ti can hit 1500 where it then pulls ahead even more. Most 1070 can do 2100? If they dont throttle. So yea the 980Ti is faster at this speed. Optimisation may have brung things closer but 980Ti faster but nothing to shout about because its not in game noticeable.

1070 is quieter and cooler and runs fast out of the box without needing to overclock. Has 2Gb extra vram. But for slightly less money you can get a card which performs just as good or slightly better if willing to push a good overclock out of it. Im surprised how many biased people there is willing to differ.

Pretty much this^^

At the time the benches were clear,at a cheaper price the 980ti was a better buy in the majority of cases considering price, unless thermals were a massive issue.

I dont deny it was a bit of gamble regarding drivers and 'DX12'but pascal looked like/is Maxwell at higher clocks i took the risk and feel like it paid off big time

Each to their own tho :)

The 980ti is a great card, but, surely it's a bit early to be praising it for it's longevity? It's only one generation old!!

And why are people so surprised at how it's keeping up with this generation's cards? It was last generation's top tier card after all, for most setups, there was no difference in performance between it and the Titan X.

It should be no trouble for this card to keep up with this generations mid range card, the 1070. And I don't think anybody here recommended upgrading from the 980ti to the 1070 as it would have been more of the side grade. But if you were buying one or the other, then that was harder question.

Back to the OP, yes, the 980ti is a great card, but, I am not sure it's going to be a gem of a GPU like the 8800GT. It hasn't even been out two years yet!!

I was tempted to buy a 2nd 980ti but I think I will just keep my money and see what the 1080ti brings.

980ti still a great card at the right price.

But people still paying £300 for them are crackers.

Completely agree with that.
THat's the key. I'd always buy the latest cards but even I agree the Ti is a good card for the right price. Although I don't look at the second hand prices I'd guess as usual few are actually the right price.

It comes down to what people are prepared to pay, nothing wrong with that imo for certain models - they are fantastic cards.

Makes me laugh at the "supprised it's lasted so long" the 1080 isn't exactly miles ahead lol
