This Business and Moment...

So I haven't heard anything back from Microsoft or the recruiter. Bad form from the recruiter IMO. But I'm guessing that means I didn't meet the mark, never mind.

Now making contact with various recruiters across the UK & Switzerland looking for remote based jobs and trying my luck that way. Fingers crossed :)

You want to work in Switzerland, or remotely from where you are for a company in Switzerland? If you fancy Basel, I could probably hook you up a decent agency. They're mine and bang on.

You'd be surprised - the recruitment process at MS can be a disjointed one at times. Suggest you reach out.

I'll give it another week and see :)

The latter :) - happy to visit the office when needed as well. Basel looks good! If you could that would be great. Via LinkedIN or email? :) Thank you!

What are you guys doing that allow you to work remotely/abroad?

I can't keep fixing paper jams in printers and setting up profiles on laptops, it's killing me so I am looking for areas I can branch into, I'd love to get into programming or infosec work but the lack of free time is a killer.

Flew in for my interview this morning. Spent a few hours with the project director and had lunch with the wider team. Beautiful city and great bunch of people. Monday is a public holiday so should find out mid to late next week.

Update on this.

Heard back from the senior manager up there this morning and I'm being recommended for the role. Should have my contract, letter of offer and details through tomorrow morning. I won't start until January (even though they want me up there in December) so the timing literally couldn't be more perfect. I have to use up 2.5 weeks worth of leave which means I've got all of December off to leisurely move house, do a lot of diving, surfing, sleeping late and catching up on some gaming!

Salary is the only downer as I'm taking a 5k haircut on salary (expected it to be more if I'm honest, so not too bad), but still more than enough for me. Although I'm getting a bonus paid out from my current role which should pretty much cover the next 4 years of that 'missing' 5k so it's all good :p

All and all, one of my better days today. I'm sure something will end up going wrong but for the moment, I'm quite pleased

You need to specialise in a field which can be done 100% from your desk.

WFH isn't for everyone though. It can be demotivating. You have to have serious self discipline to do it.

I've spent years working from home as well as managing teams from home, would be a tad difficult now as I've lost my office but once I've built my cabin in the garden that wouldn't be an issue.

It's know what areas I'll be good at. I seem to spend my life thinking and designing solutions to problems that people don't even know they have, i'm just pants at then developing those ideas due to lack of technical and programming experience :p

Working from home was the cause of conspicuous weight gain for me! I enjoyed it massively; could devote a very decent amount of time to work, reading, football and gaming, but it's vital to find a balance among everything.

As a general update on my business, things are going well - excited to see how things end up by year end. We've already surpassed our financial target for the year by a decent amount, and this could turn into a very decent amount if various bits of business drop in over the next couple of months. I've found a very active client who are pleased with the work we're doing for them - they pay well, but it's a gravy train which will run dry by next year, so putting all our efforts into completing any and all mandates we're given by them for the time being.

I was actually slimmer and fitter when I worked from home. I worked various shifts so I was having proper cooked meals instead of takeaways, I could sit on my exercise bike while working, taking 10 mins here and there to play with the kids, take the dog out on breaks etc.

Loved it. Just need my office sorted next :D

Sounds good Toshj, what is the business doing if you don't mind me asking?

After a long process I've just been promoted to a company director and received a sizable amount of shares in the business. The main shareholder is looking to retire soon so that leaves myself and another director, who I work well with, in a position to take over the business.

There's a way to go before we achieve our targets but we're well on the way.

We had an exercise bike too - but I broke one of the pedals clean off and then lost interest :( Terrible excuse really.

We're a small headhunting firm. I've previously worked at larger firms - my first employer is now at about 600 people, and I was the 7th hired, left due to stress but my then colleagues are now reveling in the company's successes, jetting all over the world, doing little work, etc. :( - but I can't be bothered with office politics and the general aggressive alpha attitude that is common in such environments. I work best when left to my own devices.

Took a year off in 2013 - my second since graduating - and then starting working for myself from home. Was a great setup; did anywhere from 0-14 hours of work a day, and then read, travelled, gamed, museums, etc. A total renovation of our flat meant that we had to move out, and a friend of mine had just returned from travelling and was at a loss as to what to do with himself. Got an office in a great building 5 minutes walk from the flat, had a third person join the company this summer and we're hopefully opening a New York office in the new year. Got my eye on a couple of new hires in London, but the European investment banking/financial services market is going to take a hammering in the coming years, so we're going to be focusing on primarily US business from 2017 onward. Great exchange rate, no compensation restrictions out there, a large and diverse financial community, etc. Looking forward to it greatly :)

Awesome :) Sounds like a great reward

....

Wow, sounds like things are looking really good and you obviously know what you are talking about! :) Personally, I'd take more pride in starting something myself and making it big than be a small cog in a big wheel :)

And I only break pedals off on real bikes...usually about 10 miles from home and have to cycle back with 1 pedal :p

Congratulations and best of luck to you :)

I have a business idea but until I've got a well paying contract to fuel it I don't have the balls to do it :o

I know that feeling, I've got pads of ideas written down to start on but lack the time or funds to start them. need to find a small one first to help fund others.

Well earlier this week I found a 2nd line support perm role online which was home based for a UK company on LinkedIN.

Seemed like it was worth a punt. Applied for it and the CEO & Founder of the company has connected with me on LinkedIN and asked if we can do a skype video call next week! :D

Ideally I'd like a contract. But whos picking! It's progress :)

I've proposed Tuesday as it's bank holiday here. Lets see :)

New contract signed, sealed and delivered. Quite surprised to have found a tidy sum in there for relocation. I must be getting old as it never occurred to me to ask. Anyway, went ahead and booked all my ferries and flights and things. 8 weeks to go and I'm outta here.

Just had a very interesting Skype call. :)

Was browsing for jobs and searching on LinkedIN and came across a 2nd/3rd line support role, 40k working remotely. UK Based company. All the staff work 100% remotely with an office get together every quarter.

Had a skype call with the founder of the company. Very very enjoyable chat. Went through necessaries to ensure I could do the job like a quiet work environment, good internet connection etc. Then spoke about the role, the company, about me and all seemed to go very well.

He said he has a few other candidates to interview but he said that I have the phone manner hes looking for, he liked me and thought all was great and he wants to mak a decision by the end of the week.

So keeping everything crossed. Got another call scheduled on Friday after hours as I'm working and we'll find out from there. :)

I WOULD have preferred a contract. But I'm so fed up of being demotivated at where I am now, I don't care.
