This Business and Moment...

It's March innit?
I was supposed to apparently get a hamper at Christmas. I never got it lol whatevs.

I've only had that at one employer (a few years ago now) and ironically I'd just left but they must have already placed the orders or didn't think to change them - was quite a fancy gift (Fortnum and Mason) and a bottle of Dom Perignon thrown in too!

Maybe if the admin girl had been on the ball and taken me off the list quicker they could have saved a few hundred £s :D

Jesus christ this is mental.

Had a meeting yesterday, and they've just dumped literally the largest most complicated project I've ever seen on me, (with 2.5 months notice left to work) and now my manager is basically going "Can we get a plan to do it now? like, ready today / tomorrow????" I'm like.... "Nope! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) "

I'm sat here looking at the stuff on my monitor with a stoic expression, thinking "I really don't want this" as I know exactly how it's going to go down. (total chaos)

Thankfully, I have 2x interviews today, one is already partially in the bag (last interview to go) and the other is a first chat today.. Both are much smaller than Amazon, but they're offering good money and much more realistic and sensible working environments...

Nuclear option: Call in sick with stress and ride out the notice period until a new offer

Sensible option: Go back to your manager and express that you aren't interested in taking on any new projects during your notice period. It may help you to reiterate that you're leaving due to a decline in your mental health and wellbeing, which you can only see being impacted further with these sorts of bozo moves.

Yeah, I'm no far off doing this to be honest.

I've never pulled a sickie before, the idea of doing it makes feel a bit grim, but...... maybe this is a good time to maybe get flu? I also don't want to really play the mental health card, but essentially you're right.

I'm leaving because I just feel bloody knackered to be honest, it's burnt me right out - I've not even done anything for a week, I've just felt completely disassociated from work, it's very strange.

Part of me feels like a big quitter, or loser - but then I look at the other examples of friends who've quit AWS for the same reason...

Awesome, got a formal offer in the bag this afternoon, Principal network architect role for a medium sized established MSP/ISP in London, (you'll all of heard of them) had a good chat with them today, seemed like a good bunch. I get the impression that things are a little more sensible there and I like that, they're also doing some pretty cool stuff, so I have a good feeling about it. The job is basically owning the technical networking side of the business, so i'll get to have a say in pretty much everything network related. I'm pretty much sold on it tbh.

I've also got a different interview scheduled for Tuesday, this is for a big American cyber security company, (Principal network eng role) theres a lot more money on the table (slightly higher basic + bonus + shares) and it would be more "challeging" but it's going to involve a few more unsocial hours, as most of the networks team is west coast. I've done this before - and it often involves starting very late (midday) but being around to be on calls at 9pm, and it annoyed me last time.. So i'm not sure whether to go through with it.

I know there's more money involved, but more money doesn't equate to happiness.. gonna sleep on it tonight, play games and talk **** with friends, then re-think tomorrow.

Waiting on contract paperwork following my job offer, longer it drags on the more I start to doubt myself about leaving.

Short to medium term I see issues where I am now with direction of the business, but longer term (years) they may well be resolved.

I have it easy/comfy where I am and could sit and take the generous base salary, but maybe not perform as well on the sales side (I’m in a commercial/commission related tech role).

New place would be a lot smaller, but new challenge, new technology, plus potential for ipo monies in 2 to 3 years (company has just received massive funding with a view to take it to ipo).

Be interested to know who if you don’t mind me asking, feel free to trust message if so, as this is the field I work in so maybe have an insight (or most likely not!).

It’s actually for a company called Crowdstrike, I’ve known about them for a while and know somebody who’s been there for a while, it sounds decent.

The only problem is timing, the place who offered yesterday I really liked, they’re going to want me to accept and get it all signed, which would be nice as it means everything is just done from my end…

On the other hand the other place are offering quite a bit more money, but it’s an American 6x interview loop, which is going to take the best part of a month.. I can’t leave the other place hanging for more than a few days really..

Yeah understand that, been in a similar situation myself where you have an offer on the table and maybe don’t have the time to start going through a new recruitment process.

Crowdstrike could be an interesting one, seem to be doing some decent stuff at the moment.

Yeah they are, it's pretty cool tech they use.

The only thing that's a little off putting, is that a big chunk of the team are US based (west coast), so it would involve me working a lot of later hours, but at the same time - there being a lot of flexibility.

I pinged them an email earlier asking if they could speed up the interview process, maybe get them all done real quick - otherwise I think i'll withdraw, as I don't want the interviews to go on for weeks whilst I have a good offer on the table.

Their recent Humio acquisition potentially opens up their offerings into some new spaces, keen to see where they take that.

@Screeeech I wouldn't go through with the unsociable hours if, like you say, you've done it before and annoyed you. You want your life back and on your terms, I wouldn't entertain this.

Yeah - definitely how I'm thinking.. If they come back with a reasonable interview schedule which isn't going to take 3 weeks I might at least see what they have to say. Nothing to lose by going through the process, I think :D

Still no contract from potential new place today, longer it goes on waiting longer I have to doubt myself!
How long have you been waiting for the contract and have you chased them?

If you've not heard back in 2-3 weeks then I'd get on the phone and speak to them. If they're still sketchy about giving you a hard and fast timeline then you may want to up the ante and express that you've had other offers and you would prefer to hang on for his opportunity*

*I bet HR bods have heard this one a zillion times but ultimately if you were in a position to accept another offer and they lost their preferred candidate because they were slow issuing a contract then that'll be egg on their face!

Verbal acceptance early last week, to be fair I had some conditions for joining and I got a message Monday saying that was all approved and contract being drawn up, and message today to say it's held up with legal but all still going through.

So just a bit of a waiting game, was hoping to have it by the weekend to review but guessing it'll be early next week now!

If they're being communicative then that a good sign. HR/legal shouldn't take too long - only cross international borders I'd expect to take more than a week.
