This Business and Moment...

If they're being communicative then that a good sign. HR/legal shouldn't take too long - only cross international borders I'd expect to take more than a week.

Yup, it’s certainly across international borders.

I’m not worried so much about it turning up, more that the longer it takes the more time you have to doubt yourself that you’re doing the right thing :p

The only problem is timing, the place who offered yesterday I really liked, they’re going to want me to accept and get it all signed, which would be nice as it means everything is just done from my end…

On the other hand the other place are offering quite a bit more money, but it’s an American 6x interview loop, which is going to take the best part of a month.. I can’t leave the other place hanging for more than a few days really..
I had a similar situation over December / January - basically the US company was slow as hell, five weeks after the first interview I'd done four interviews (including two panels of 3 with people in NA). I had told their internal recruitment team after the first interview that I had something else in the pipeline and they made noises about keeping them updated so they could try to speed up the process, but it didn't seem to make any difference. I got an offer from somewhere else and it was still slow, they said they were adding yet another stage after the 4th interview (not originally planned) but had no date for it. I basically kept the other place waiting for about 2 weeks and then decided enough was enough, I'd go with that, given the salary range was higher anyway, and I was keen to leave my prior role. If there was a concrete schedule I'd probably have seen it through but it all seemed so vague.

I applied for an internal role at the end of January. My manager had to be involved as I'm a member of the site leadership team.

Mid Feb - Told I had passed the screening and they'd be in touch for an interview.
March 1st - I had an interview with the hiring manager and was informed that they'd let me know.
March 15th - I called the hiring manager to get an update on the application. No timeline specified but was told i'm still one of the candidates being considered.
April 1st - My boss called the hiring manager to find out what's happening particularly as he needs to advertise to cover any potential vacancy. No update.
April 7th - A colleague in Netherlands asked for an update on the role (via a group call) as there's a chap staying on to cover a handover and he's retiring next month. No update.

Part of me wants to withdraw my application on principle (I wouldn't accept being messed about like for on an external role) and hate the feeling that they've got me by the balls and I just have to accept the ridiculous wait.

The longer it's going on, the more it's annoying me now

I was in a similar situation, one of the other companies was talking about potentially offering quite a bit more money, but they were being slow and whilst going on and on about wanting to interview me, they didn't seem to be able to go any faster.. So I went back to the first company (who I liked) and told them the situation, within 30 mins they came back and matched the other company's highest offer, so I decided to go with them - signed the contract earlier.

Feel a lot better now everything is sorted and I can start planning stuff out, work are currently harassing the hell out of me but I don't give a ****. They dumped this massive project on me right in the middle of working my notice, and I just - don't have the fight left in me to do it, I just want to get shot of it, and press this big reset button.

Place i'm going too is much smaller, but I'll have the most say technically on a big chunk of the business, so whilst it's a bit different - in a way I get to do things my way, as opposed to just having monsterous great piles of unrealistic work dumped on me, which is nice.

Sounds great and must be a nice weight off your shoulders knowing it’s sorted, just have to deal with your notice period :/

I’ve been told my contract should be with me by the end of this week…

Ahh the good old "give the leaver the hot potato". ... and that small company will have lots of fires that are just as important to it.

When you're known for sorting crap out reliably, you end up with all the hot potatoes being dumped on you. That's good training for the senior/exec world - by the time the project has escalated to you late typically it's in meltdown or has gone off like a a-bomb. Even when you promote a culture that tackles this before it's got to meltdown you still get them.
Portfolio of services from a division now merging in to ours with no business operational budget planned, built on top of a service without a risk assessment with CEO risk delegate signoff, and the vendor patched a security hole in their service resulting in board level legal? - no problem give it to Nick along with the other services and programmes he's got. Sorted.

The best thing you can do on your way out the door is to get things running smoothly. It's the best slap in the face for people not to fight your corner if they find they're missing another one of you. You'll have a good reputation as you'll always bump into people later in life.

In other news - a mate has given me a number for a guy that I met once when clay pidgeon shooting who is building up a team. So I'll have a chat within today and see what he's looking for.

I suspect most employers are needing to give boost or loose people very quickly.
Yup

I've had some advice to increase my forecast payroll cost line by a decent percentage and whack up the cost of living provision massively so all good indicators we may be doing a half year adjustment.

I whacked a decent amount in my pension to avoid tapering though. However what it has presented as a left wing option is the possibility of going 4 days a week and only losing 500 cash...

Had the contract come through today for the role I’ve been offered and it’s left me a little underwhelmed in a few areas, which is now making me doubt the move again.

Total first world problem to have, but really confused now as to what to do, hoping sleeping on it will help clear my head a bit to really sort this out tomorrow.

What are the issues? Mediocre salary? Small amount of holiday entitlement?

If you’re now earning commission, surely selling is part of your role?
Ah I see - it was the "need to retire" comment that confused me - I'm a good 25 years from retirement.

No, I do not have a quota. Active selling is not my core role, but I do have the opportunity to upsell to existing customers and influence deals at the presales stage.

Mixture of things, salary was known before so it's not that (although shine taken off that a little with current place counter offering) but just some other elements around commission and incentive plans as well as benefits like pension etc.

Ah nice. Comm without a quota is almost the best of both worlds.

"Retiring quota" just means to chip away at the target they've set you for selling.

Got informed today I was unsuccessful.

I’m more cheesed off that they said I needed more time to develop in the company but couldn’t actually give me anything specific.

I also know that the hiring manager (who got promoted to ultimate boss mid way through the process) referred a candidate, so potentially a case of hiring his mate.

He said they wanted to recruit outside the UK and diversify and that I “wasn’t to know” even though the job was clearly advertised in all countries, which seems illegal and discriminatory

It’s the first time I’ve ever been unsuccessful internally so I don’t think I’ll be hanging around to find out what the new team looks like. Seeing someone in the role will just grate on me.

To the internet and job searching!

Yeah best thing to do in that situation, their loss, move externally and hopefully get a bigger bump in pay! :)
