This Business and Moment...

That level of attrition is way too high for any job that people are voluntarily signing up for. Something is fundamentally wrong if more than half of the new joiners are leaving within a week.
My 17yr old works part time in a chain bakery round the corner and has done part time since he was 15. He says these days they cannot get people and if they do, they just never show back up again after 1 day, 1 week and sometimes just leave at lunch and don't come back. Sure it's a slog doing customer services/ dealing with bakery retail work, but these guys are people with zero experience just bailing because they don't like it...

Just read some of the posts above, anybody that gets a chance to go somewhere like Sweden, take it.

Yes it’s a massive thing and risk, but just look at the positives and how much better off you could be there both personally and professionally.

I would jump at the chance to go to anywhere in Scandinavia at the moment.

Thanks to political reasons, us from the UK cant just up and easily move to another European country anymore.

Just like where I currently live, unless you work in STEM. Your chances of moving here is basically zero :(

It must be horrendously inefficient and the existing staff trying to bring new people up to speed will get fed up and lose confidence in the process, just do the bare minimum because they think it is a waste of time, thus perpetuating the cycle.

Maybe the recruitment process isn't honest enough and people are getting the wrong expectations about what the job entails. Get people on the shop floor to refine the job specs to match reality and don't sugar-coat what you are needing people to do.

Nothing has changed negatively on our end compared to previous years, in fact some benefits this year which weren't there before.

There are issues with the recruitment and induction process but it has always been like that - something is fundamentally wrong but I don't believe that lies within where I work.

There seems to be a significant and quite sudden decrease in the number of people prepared to do an honest days work but what factor(s) are involved in the current situation I'm not sure (I can only assume something like benefits is why so many are ghosting us before the onboarding process - in the past even when people applied for several jobs and went with one of the others they've more often than not replied in some form to that end).

So the thing I don't get is why are these bums turning up in the first place? Like you go to the trouble of going through a recruitment process, supplying whatever details you need to get onboarded etc and then you just do a runner at lunchtime on the first day? Seems like more hassle than it's worth... I guess maybe they can just try 10 different jobs and find one that is cushy and stick with that, anything that requires a bit of graft you just quit straight away.

That said I've been approached by an internal head-hunter for a lead role in a large UK company. Going to have a chat this week, I feel it's a bit of a reach for me, but the core skills/requirements I have already, just the experience at that level.

Be a good experience if nothing else

Interview went well, was more laid back than I am used to which was nice.

See what happens but I got a great feeling from it could be an excellent next step for my career, nice package too.

We all will be hitting that barrier from now on for those who want to do better job wise in mainland Europe. Thanks to stupid politician reasons
Not helped by the Swedish immigration service being on it's knees at the moment. They said it would take 3-4 months to process a work visa. Given the timelines on the project I'm not surprised they went with an internal candidate, I would have!

Can't complain really, I'm financially much better off staying for a while with the low taxes here.

Yeah that makes sense if they can have someone start in less than a month.

@malachi did I see on Linkedin you've been doing some Azure certs the past year or so?

What resources have you been primarily using?

I have been using mainly MS docs and MS learn going through the exam objectives step by step.

I also have an ITpro.TV subscription which has a few Azure courses but I have been mainly using John Savill's Azure videos on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@NTFAQGuy

What's the best way to go about health plans in a limited company consisting of just two directors?

Can't get through to the doctors so want to go private. If I can go through the business then that would be preferred.

You will be liable for benefit in kind with private healthcare now unfortunately.
I’ve just been through the same chat with my accountant and a specialist broker for contractors (CMME - check them out as they’re worth chatting to), and the consensus was not to do it. I got a Bupa quote with CMME for about £152/month for the 2 of us though.

You could get relevant life cover through the business though which pays up to 25 times your annual income in the event of death, which I’ve just set up.

Thanks Maccy, part of me suspected there'd be a drawback of some sort. I'll be speaking to someone from our accounting company next week but won't expect much.

Relevant life sounds worth looking into, I will mention it thanks

Some advice please fellow business bros

My contract, just being extended until 2024, noice.

No day rate increase for that time, not so noice. I've asked for one and they say I'd need to present a business case for why I think I need one. Surely that's just me saying "I am doing an awesome job and feel that I deserve a bit more"

Any one done similar and what I could put/how to phrase it?

“I can get more elsewhere, bye”

^This here is the truth!

Its the same crap I am going through right now. Recruiters asking me if I am willing to take an 6K paycut when appyling for new roles........I had to nicely ask them, haven't they been reading the news about COST OF LIVING GOING UP!!!!!! Why on earth would I take an 6K paycut!?!?!? WTF!!!! The cheek of them!

I had the chance to move to Sweden pre-pandemic. Hindsight says it was the wrong decision (I turned it down) it was big money but equally I could have been stuck there for 2 years with no opportunity to see my family/friends.

Wouldn't hesitate if the same opportunity came up again mind :(

Recruiters typically get a commission on new hires so they're just trying to ensure they get the deals over the line. Did you respond?

I moved to Switzerland in 2019, 6 months before covid was even a thing. Lockdown happen and yeah, couldn't see my family/friends for 2 years.

Did it bother me? Not really, as I made friends and found myself a girlfriend while here.
Would I do it all over again? Yep, making away more money here than in the UK. While gaining new skills along the way.

Yeah, I was talking to the recruiters on the phone. I told them all, Im not taking a paycut.
