This Business and Moment...

Got to second interview. I have got concerns about notice period as I think they are trying to fill the role ASAP. But let's see.

Are your employers not flexible with it? I had a 6 month one and when I wrote my letter I put something about I understand it is 6 months but I would appreciate if my leaving date could be <less than>. I indicated to the potential new employer at the time what it officially was but that I would try and lessen.

Sigh... thought we were missing a consignment at work so escalated a case with the sender, before finding out some idiot had combined 2 different consignments in transit and stuck the label from one over the top of the other... just got a reply back "Sorry about that I've found it and will send on next available delivery"... no idea what they've found but it isn't the "missing" consignment LOL.

First week in my new role but haven't been given much information beside the role spec and offer email months ago - as I understand it an employer has to give a written statement of particulars at least on the first day with stuff like notice period, sick pay, probation period etc? Even if a formal employment contract comes later.

Was also given a laptop older than I've been working in finance (Vostro 15 with a 768p screen and only VGA out...) to use so I gave that a few days but put an IT ticket in yesterday for something more suitable, as even with the basics open I was at 90% memory usage and Outlook struggling to open folders, like a refurb 14" ThinkPad. I suspect it isn't IT at fault, but rather them not being told what my role is and my working arrangements.

Wait you're working without a formal contract? Yeah I wouldn't do that. That's a red flag.

I suspect it isn't that unusual to start without a formal one depending on the type of job, per gov guidance a contract exists the minute you accept a job offer as it doesn't need to be in writing. But for a professional role like mine it's unusual.

I'm entitled to at least a written statement within 2 months of starting by law but I should have been given the basics (as above, beyond what was in the job offer and spec) on the first day. Terms would just be statutory and implied and what I already agreed to in person/by email if there was any disputes.

Sigh.....Been told this morning that I'm at risk of redundancy. I was apart of a small company engineering company that got bought by a bigger company last year that was looking to float (pretty sure the whole thing was just a box tick). The IPO went **** up and one of their larger customers has cancelled one of the larger jobs of the year and now they're laying people off because last month they had their first ever financial loss.

Time to get job hunting :(

That's awful, I hope you're sorted soon. What kind of role are you in? Engineering in the UK has had a strong start this year so hopefully you'll be able to jump straight into something else.

Bit of a tricky one, I work in electronics engineering, designing schematics, PCB design and write test software etc but don't have an electronics degree.

I started as an electronics technician 10 years ago and worked my way up, so a bit unsure what to go for next as I don't really feel 'qualified' to apply for electronics engineer roles.

If you have experience, I wouldnt worry about the paper.

So the contractor that hired me has now left the building last week, so I'm now picking up the pieces. Had a first call with the CISO, that was fun and toasty initially. Within the same monologue it was a case of "we don't need your help", to "we can't upskill", to "we need central resources to help", then after the discussions, finally "I'm not normally like this - please don't leave us.". CISO the most stressful role in the world and most likely has PST because of it..
The work is moving, but never fast enough.. but the internal customers seem happier. The next CIO delivery status meeting should be a blood bath.. but hey it's progressing in the right direction.

I can see my nezt month being hellish as we get things moving and between now and ramping up delivery as we move out of the initiation.

Well made it to the last interview. However unfortunately didn't quite make it work. The other person they had in mind could start almost immediately and to be fair (I know the person as we've worked together and he told me he was head hunted as well!) He's awesome at the job. Frankly we're both good for the role.

I did say to him once he's got it and is established if he can try an engineer an opportunity to join him (happy to work with him). So I've got a contact that's going to be in the Saudi infrastructure space. I'm disappointed of course but also now quite interested in exploring the opportunity more proactively now and will be reaching out to contacts to see if I can make something work. I just feel the need for adventure whilst the kids are still young enough not be more resilient to change.

Ironically work here in the UK is starting to cook on gas and I'm enjoying it (despite politics and dealing with .govs)... It's a very fortunate position to be in.

End of my second week and still no formal employment contract - I'm not sure how forcefully to pursue it. I've raised it with them and the recruiter (who was particularly annoyed that it hadn't been done during my 3 month notice period).

No movement on the crap laptop either.

Sigh, the grass certainly isn't always greener. It's not like they're a small operation either, they're the biggest employer in town!

I would stop work and find another role.

Simply put - they are trying it on and benefitting.

Best be totally honest with the recruiter - no contract is a bad situation for everyone (even the recruiter doesn't get paid I assume).

Not sure about that, but they did sound angry when I told them. I said much the same, that it's in their interests as well as mine to have one ready on day 1.

I found out last week that another member of the team who has been there a month longer than me also hasn't got a formal contract in place, as they put the wrong address on it so they haven't signed it yet.

I've applied today for a few other jobs just as a back up. If I get an offer from any, I'll probably be taking it.

Well legally you can stop working and take as much vacation as you want.. if there's no contract..

Sounds to me like the recruiter is getting backhanders to look the other way and keep people stringed along.

Currently there's no reason for them to pay you (other than a verbal offer?).

I'm not an expert on the specifics of recruiter fees but I think they typically get invoiced later so if you leave he isn't getting paid. I'd request it in writing from HR with your line manager in copy.

As for the laptop, some places just have a really unstructured approach whereby you just get given what's available and no refresh plan in place. So you might get something brand new or something 5 years old regardless of your job. I wouldn't hold your breath on that one, I've always had worse IT equipment at work than at home. 20 years ago I had a job where I used 3 different workstations, they were running 3 different version of Windows (WinNT, Win98 and Win2000) and one of them was woefully underpowered for it's job (constantly paging to disk and this was long before the days of SSDs).
