This Business and Moment...

What do you mean by "there's no leadership"? Are you referring to direction for where to take the company/products, or are you more referring to accountability and ownership?
Bit of both - senior directive (ie business, finance, delivery and technical) are all completely misaligned.

~11 interviews last week for new roles, 3 no show with no contact/can't get in contact, 1 cancelled. We've taken on 4 new people recently, 2 seem good, 1 has had more time off sick than they've been in work which doesn't bode well and the other did 1 shift then ghosted us. Always such a mess dealing with people.

Christ, what industry is that in? I wouldn’t dream of pulling a sick day or just not turning up in a new job.

Distribution. I'm guessing those that just ghost us either got another job or just doing the minimum to get their benefits (not sure if it is like it used to be).

We have a dog-friendly office, but I don't have an office-friendly dog.

This is her in a rare ten minutes of laying on my lap, not whining at people for attention/begging for food :o

And that's why i don't allow dogs in my office.

The smell, requirement for attention, pooping in the office, need to take it outside to do its business - they are just a distraction.

Bah! Humbug :)

Some days in my office it seems there are more dogs than people! Some people bring their dogs every day.

Never seen any poo in the office, it doesn't smell, but yes the requests for attention can get a bit much. She'll chill out after a few visits, it's just all very new and exciting for her at the moment. Plus everyone thinks she is a puppy so they all want to play (and she acts like a puppy so that only encourages them)

Poop in the office - quite a few times, middle of the office floor or in a corridor.

Dogs do smell - they just do. We as owners, just get used to the smell.

Everyone fawning over the dogs, the dogs get bored and start wandering, need attention etc.

For me an office is not a place dogs, what next, bring your kids in? I have a dog, but it's my responsibility to ensure she is looked after while i'm at work. I know some people disagree and even at work my team have challenged me as some want to bring them in, some don't - some have a dislike for dogs. So no dogs rule is enforced.

I wouldn't want to work in an office with dogs in every day but every so often or even once a week is fine. Any place with a strict no dogs rule sounds like a **** place to work and needs to chill out a bit.

And as for what's next? Brings your kids in? Well no because dogs are already better than children.

I think the challenge is some people are legitimately disturbed by dogs as they're afraid or don't like their behaviour. I love animals but I can't help but be aware a fully shared office isn't an easy place to guarantee everyone is happy with it. Same for allergies.

Maybe I'm just uptight - when people turn up with dogs in offices I tend to just think "Booo, I'd love to say hi to your dog but this isn't the place for it".

That said if I could take a dog to work, I may well commit to getting one. So it's not a simple issue.

I completely understand why people would not want dogs in an office by the way - it's not my policy, it's the company's.

I'm not even a dog person myself really, definitely more of a cat guy.

It doesn't seem to cause any dramas here though; there are usually quite a few dogs in the office on any given day - Austria is more dog friendly than the UK anyway (dogs in shops and restaurants here are a common sight) so I guess the Austrians are just generally less uptight about this sort of thing. People are told at interview that it's a dog-friendly office and that there are usually a number of dogs here on any given day. I guess if you don't really like dogs then you can make your mind up at the interview stage.

She stays home most of the time and is perfectly happy on her own, it's just nice to give her a change of scenery every now and then.

Yep, I agree with this but with hybrid working being a thing now. I dont see why people would bring their dogs into the office

Dogs used to make me nervous after a couple of incidents as a child, I'm a bit more chilled now but say 20 years ago if people had been bringing dogs into the office I'd have been constantly on edge, wouldn't have been happy with it at all and would probably have tried to find ways to minimise exposure like hiding in the toilet for 10mins or something (in fact that might have been self-fulfilling as it might have triggered IBS)

The dog thing is interesting
  • Although I own a dog, I would not say I'm a dog lover/dog person. Dogs are "alright", so personally I am not bothered much either way.
  • My general opinion is that dogs smell, some a lot more than others :D but honestly I do not think the office smells of dogs, it smells like any other office. It's a big space, so any impact is minimal I suppose.
  • I appreciate that some people are very nervous around dogs/dislike dogs and might not feel comfortable working with dogs around and the possibility of barking or other disturbances
But surely, if you interview somewhere and they tell you it's a dog friendly office and that there are dogs there a lot (which my company point out at interview and in their paperwork) then it's up to you if you decide that you do not want to work somewhere that has dogs in the office?
Same as I decided not to work for Greenpeace a few years ago because I wasn't aligned with their mission and ideology, or you wouldn't take a job that sounded dull - or any other reason for deciding not to work somewhere.
So for example HangTime your hypothetical situation should never have been possible unless you a) entered into that situation knowing what you were letting yourself in for or b) the company suddenly one day said "DOGS R OK FROM 2DAY".

Unless you got the job a few years ago when everyone was working fully remote, so it didn't matter whether there was dogs around people's desks, and hybrid working or full return to office had since been mandated. If that was me, I'd have looked for another job, not because of dogs, but because I am too used to 100% WFH.

I received a promotion recently (within a year of my employment) and now report to the board of the company. After 20 years of working, within the last 6 and 3 years I've had a couple of bad experiences in the past of being devalued and bullied at my previous workplaces, which has given me imposter syndrome. Anyone else suffer with this?
