This Business and Moment...

Haha just been asked if i want to go to the US on a trip the week after i move to Spain. My boss opened the conversation with "I know this is unlikely...but"

It's a shame as i think it'd be a beneficial trip as i've still not met all the US team. However, given the amount of stuff i'll have to sort out it's just not going to work. Especially leaving my disabled wife in Spain to try and get everything sorted. Hopefully there's another opportunity in the near future.

It was a funny day.. the workshop (6 hours) of careful discussion yesterday has ended up as a second bite of the cherry at 5pm today... speaking to my 'line' manager for mid year.. seems he has as many issues and was scribbling away each time I said how they should solve issues and then suggests that the two teams should be combined (ie can't not guess he's attempting to own the entire lot as his team got downsized by an external consultancy report).
Had a 121 with the group CTO.. and he sees just as much carp.. meanwhile I have my old boss being vexed there's no roadmap (see point about workshop).. their politics is terminal. Budget bingo seems to be empty and it's I think it wont be long before all the good people have moved on..

I had a good convo with the mrs who is away atm.. and I will start looking for a new job. I think I've started to check out mentally already which is a good sign that something is really bad considering I normally am the last person out the door in solving issues.

On leave today and tomorrow. Got a calendar invite to a catch-up, at 8.30am... every Monday to Thursday.

Rejected it outright within about 30 seconds, repeat after me... "My contracted hours are 9am-5.30pm".

About 5 minutes later got an email from my manager suggesting it's quite an important call and we should try to join as much as possible. Welp, I'll talk to him Monday.

Ah, the age old classic of our diaries are full so let's put it in before working hours.

Sounds like it is a management issue, and not a you issue.

Exactly - those people on the 8.30am project are largely contractors who are hammer and tongs at one single project, al day long. I think they don't realise many of us have multiple work strands and commitments.

Today's update is that most people can't do 8.30am so is 9.30am ok. Several people pushed back that they have standups etc. I'll see Monday what's the final proposal...

It's not just work commitments, it's school runs, nursery runs etc. People can't just stop their lives because it suits someone else's diary. Stuff like this really grips my ****, luckily we see very little of it but I'm the same as you, I just decline stuff that doesn't suit my day and then I usually get a follow up call wanting some form of justification. Or when you get a meeting invite when you already have something in your diary and they act surprised when you decline and don't turn up. Typical micro management BS.

A 1-2-1 is not important enough to dig into personal time.

I don't mind meetings out of my times as I work flexibly, but I do not like having the expectation that it's ok to expect me to work outside of my work hours.

Not sure what happened there but..
* my moaning my and bitching about funding and fiance got a director actioned..
* the roadmap got ratified
* risk agreed that 2 month extension is a good thing..

Odd meeting, kind of like all the unicorn rainbows aligned.
Good job Nickk. Prepare the next extension when 2 months gets hoovered up with people relaxing because they have 2 more months :D

Steering stakeholder management for this.. (I kid you not - 4 company boards)
* 4x CDIOs
* 4x BISO
* 2x CISOs
* 3x Financial directors
* 1x Group CTO
* 1x Group CIO
* 1x Group finance director
* Group wide consuming programmes..
The fun.. each company is operating completely independently (no top down control), with funding solely from companies (this is a core issue).
Oddly time is less of concern :)

This was one of my pet hates in the past, resources dedicated to one project imposing their schedule on employees spread across many things. You'd get the "apologies for crashing diaries..." line that was very much sorry-not-sorry, almost like a badge of honour to show how important they considered themselves to be.

I've done my share of out of hours meetings but they are typically adhoc, I'm generally OK with those given sufficient notice if it's a give-and-take sort of environment. When dealing with different timezones it can be hard to connect with busy people in the US so I don't mind evening meetings every now and then.

The smart people are those that look for slots where I have meetings that are more likely to be movable (like 1:1s) and politely ask if I could move it to facilitate a bigger meeting. The ones that just steamroller a meeting on top of an important session for something else or where I'm dealing with third parties get declined. e.g. I've had people booking meetings on top of interviews, I'm not going to request a candidate reschedules because someone else isnt planning far enough ahead.
