This Business and Moment...

So its been a interesting few weeks.

I didn't accept the role which wanted me to take a paycut but an got an offer from the role I had the interview with their Chief Digital Transformation Officer. Which I accepted 3 weeks ago :) Need to grind out the next 3 months notice period but thankfully something in my contract HR didn't notice until someone pointed it out. My 3 months notice start from the day I resign not the month end like usual companies do in Switzerland. Leaving me nice 10 days in November before I start my new job December 1st.

The day I resigned HR called me into the office to ask if anything they could do for me to stay. Considering the main reason I am leaving is because the company has an strict in the office, 5 days a week, 9 to 6 with no flexibility or work from home. Which they couldn't offer me yet I work in IT.
The next day I saw my boss being called into the office by the COO, I thought nothing of it. Then I was called into the office, they made offers for me to stay. More money, promotion to Senior and they would pay for my German classes (where was all of this before I decided to resign ) Anyway my answer was still no as the new job is offering better and I don't need to be in the office everyday.
Over the coming weeks, our dev guy resigned, the companies CTO resigned and yesterday my boss resigned. Everyone has just had enough of the place. Our IT department went from 10 people last year and will be 3 people remaining by end of December.

Another note, also started doing some work remotely for a charity based in the UK. As their Cyber Security Manager, I wasn't expecting anything when I applied a few months back but after one interview. They decided to accept me :) Not sure how long its going to last but its something to do in my spare time after work and another skillset I can build.
Nice work on contract, extremely surprised they didn't do swiss contract on end of month when you first joined.

Out of curiosity is your 2 decades experience in Switzerland or only recently there? I'm sure you're aware there are huge pressures at the moment especially with the UBS rumours of outsourcing etc. If you're not fluent in swiss german or at very least hoch Deutsch I would really put a lot of focus on it. It will become increasingly irrelevant (for purposes of job) and increasingly important (for a country that protects their own).

Are you planning to stay in Switzerland long term? Sounds like great news though, congratulations on having confidence to make the move! :)

Having fun, scheduling error has put us massively behind, boss gone home with COVID, another manager on holiday, rota issue/holiday leaving us short so no hope of catching up, had to suspend someone, the building is starting to flood for the second time today...

They had the contract written by an 3rd party company who wasn't based in Switzerland. The company HQ is based in Switzerland but the company itself is Greek. I think they got a Greek company to write the contract (cheaper) but somehow they wasn't aware of the usual end of month resignation :D

:)

Nope, most of my experience is from the UK. I moved to Switzerland in summer 2019, since I moved here I've had 4 jobs. The new job will be my 5th. I will be focusing more on my German. I have done the A1 classes etc but that stopped when lockdown happened and all the schools closed. Doing online, can only go so far.

But yeah, over the last 12 months speaking German has flagged up to be an requirement again. Many companies relaxed that rule during 2021, 2022 but they are hammering down on that requirement again.

A year after I moved here, I got with an Swiss woman I was with for two years. Biggest regret now was not practicing enough high German and Swiss German with her. I want to go for my early C permit next year, so I be signing up to an German class, doing it 5 days a week after work for 2 hours starting in January.

Thanks :) Me moving to Switzerland is permanent, Im not planned on returning back to the UK or moving anywhere else. I have built up a nice network of friends here, mixture of locals and non locals. I had no friends or family when I moved here, started my whole life from scratch.

Long term I want to start my own business here. Another reason why I need to crack on with upping my German language skills so I can get more clients.

It was a funny day.. the workshop (6 hours) of careful discussion yesterday has ended up as a second bite of the cherry at 5pm today... speaking to my 'line' manager for mid year.. seems he has as many issues and was scribbling away each time I said how they should solve issues and then suggests that the two teams should be combined (ie can't not guess he's attempting to own the entire lot as his team got downsized by an external consultancy report).
Had a 121 with the group CTO.. and he sees just as much carp.. meanwhile I have my old boss being vexed there's no roadmap (see point about workshop).. their politics is terminal. Budget bingo seems to be empty and it's I think it wont be long before all the good people have moved on..

I had a good convo with the mrs who is away atm.. and I will start looking for a new job. I think I've started to check out mentally already which is a good sign that something is really bad considering I normally am the last person out the door in solving issues.

Seems I was right... seems that we're back to the deliver ASAP JFDI ... etc.. seriously - why not just say it in the steerco? - said to be mrs I'm going to quit.. so actively looking for a new company and in the mean time write a very long resignation letter.. the entire place has no leadership, no management and really - no future given the first two. Simply put I don't want my skills to atrophy.

Been offered a role advertised as hybrid / flexible where it turns out I'd have to be in the office (45 mins away) 4 days per week.

Great benefits but I'm currently remote and based at home 90% of the time and love it, especially with a young family.

It's a real dilemma as the new role is a step up in seniority and company but not much more actual salary.

I'm going in for the day with them for a handover meeting with the incumbent and will make my decision after that, but I really feel I'd be stupid to move from remote to 4 days in an office for basically the same pay and way more responsibility.

Dilemma.

Unless more money is involved, I wouldnt do it. Sounds like more of an side step.

You'd have to pay me a significant amount of money more than I'm on to move to an office role 4 days a week.

I HATE the idea of 4 days per week in an office, especially when it's city centre with parking restrictions. The new role is:

- £3k more basic
- £2k more car and EV salary sacrifice scheme
- 10% more pension contribution from employer
- 31 days holiday + BHs (6 more than current)
- Much better life insurance and private medical for me and the family (currently just me)
- More senior higher profile role
- More prestigious company

Downsides are 100% chance of a ball busting line manager and 4 days in the orifice.

Not sure what your salary is but whilst the package does seem better, I would not be moving roles for an extra £3k base, especially if it involved having to go into an office for most of the week.

Is the 10% more pension contributions 10% higher than before, or 10% more of your salary? That there is a 10% raise surely. It does look like more benefits, just not a lot more cash.

I agree it'd take a lot to go back to 4 days a week though. I went from 2 days a week on paper but less in practice, to full time, for 14% payrise. Honestly it's cost the company because I now finish by 6pm and shut down for the day regardless of how much work piles up.

10% more contribution by the employer, for the same contribution by me, so I guess genuine additional remuneration.

I'm just sitting here thinking of everything I wouldn't be able to do any longer by having to go into an office so much :(.

That extra salary is likely to just disappear in fuel, parking and buying lunch. Only benefit I see is the step up would be good on your CV for the next move.

I'd be somewhat hacked off if it was sold as a hybrid role when its clearly not. A bait and switch would turn me off from a trust point of view pretty much regardless of the package on offer.

Once you factor in the time+cost of commuting, I'm fairly certain the new job will be a pay cut in real terms.

Granted you'd be better off in the long run with the much improved pension offer, but you have to wait X years to reap that benefit.

It would be a definite hard no from me if you like working remotely. Those perks (imo) are definitely not worth jumping ship for.

Yay I’ve just been told about some interesting choices engineering has made on their own.. and I’ve also found that they’ve basically been unprofessional in their approach to planning and delivery… guess who is going to be doing a load of damage control..
almost the end of the day

That'd be a hard no from me as well. A company is going to have to pay me significantly more money to entice me back into the office and the commuting rat-race. In my world (as an employee within the US tech industry), that would have to be a considerable six figure bump.
