This Business and Moment...

Can you move? What are the costs of moving? Can you agree odd hours so you don't get caught in traffic? E.g. 6 AM to 3 PM?

Hours are something I'm going to investigate, probably not though as I'd have a number of staff reporting to me and also I'll be working closely with senior management to our hours would have to coincide. Moving is kind of redundant. One of the reasons I'm looking at the job is to have more time at home. Currently I'm away 2+ days a week which is something I didn't sign up for.

2017 was the worst year of my life. In Apr my position was made redundant & my whole world went into a spin. I secured a position in another country but didn't give it the normal due diligence with not thinking straight & trusting that my now ex-partner who lived in that country would flag anything major. Settling there just never happened, it took over 3 mos to find a home because I have a dog, and then in Dec I walked in to work to be told I no longer had a job. The company mislead me from the start & whilst I am seeking legal council I realistically have to face defeat. My parents have offered me their sofa & I can ship my possessions & pop them into short term storage. When all this is done I'll have wasted around 12k in moving/living costs. :(

I have nothing left, and whilst I'm trying to think of this as a chance to start a fresh it is pretty soul destroying. I have 14+ years work experience but I feel so low right now & I've had a severe viral infection (the doctors originally thought it was whooping cough) which means I'm not even well enough to do any interviewing at the moment.

:( :( :(

December 2017 was the anniversary of my first full year in the company, so I just had my appraisal.

I knew I’d done well as the site metrics have been glowing all year but my line manager topped it off by saying it’s the first time he’s ever given anyone a rating of “over achieving” in their first year.

Didn’t have the guts to ask for a pay rise, as our customer has been struggling for cash flow this year but if I can keep the momentum going for 2018 I’ll be asking

The Reckoning is coming!

https://tymly.io/blog/the-reckoning

Had a quick read, but not had a proper look round yet, seems like an interesting idea if I understand what it is trying to do.

I've often wished I had the knowledge and skill to start developing systems for the country/countries. Remove the massive cost of software so that the money can be better used towards what it's meant for, health, education, services etc.

Mix this with opensource operating systems, software and governments would save millions. Throw in voice recognition and stress analysis for emergency services phone calls, giving teachers the ability to develop and share lesson plans and training material for free and it would only improve the standard of services for everyone.

Even in my current role, I am still within my 6 months probation, I'm learning it but it's a massive field to learn and there are people that have been here 4 years who are still learning. I may not be able to code like some of them (SQL) but due to my outlook, my team has streamlined and improved processes. We've got SQL rules that took 6 hours to run now running in 10 mins as the code has been analyzed and streamlined. I am working on creating a training and development system for new starters because the current one is ****. I'm an idea's person and I'm loving it here, people have been here 10 years doing things the same way, time for a change! :D

It sounds like a really rough year, I've been there myself, redundancies and lies, but you know what, best thing that ever happened to me. My money still isn't where it was 4 years ago but I'm in a much better position now, being recognised for my work and having real pride in my role.

When people say "when one door closes another opens". it's true, it might not be the right door for you straight away but it'll lead to something much better. No position is secure, enjoy the ride but always be prepared to have to change direction and look forward to where it takes you.

What experience have you got work wise?

Interview coming up this week for an internal position and it’ll be my first one in 7 years, think it makes it worse when you know the interviewers!

Also includes a 15 minute presentation which is nothing at all, but I haven’t a clue on a topic that’ll be interesting and showcase my communication well. If I go the safe route and stick to our business it’ll bore them to death.

pick something stupid or funny, "jaffa cakes, cake or biscuit?" If you know them what things do they like in their spare time?

This is true and it's something that I'm trying to keep in mind when I'm feeling exceptionally low.

I have a mix of experience; People management, business process, PMO, project management, purchase order processing (Oracle), customer service, training/coaching, product planning etc.

I often fill gaps, &/or take on additional roles/responsibilities which is why my skillset is quite mixed.

You sound like me, I've everything from Forklift truck licenses to experience with life insurance :) People with mixed skill sets I often find bring much more to a role because they can see things from so many perspectives.

It's also one of the reasons that I got the job I have now, limited SQL skills but a can do take anything on attitude got me the position, great company to work for in that respect, just **** commuting to Stoke every day :D You'll find one too!!

Ah commuting can be a pain. I hated it here when I had to commute for over an hour by train & if there were train issues it was a nightmare. Which I'd imagine is similar to your commute into Stoke (I think we previously worked at the same company about 7 yrs or so ago).

My parents are based in Stoke, but I can look further afield if needed. I just cannot wait to be back on my feet.

You should have absolutely no issues obtaining a role of a similar pay-scale or even better with 14 years experience in a number of areas, I'd try and forget about the 12k loss as that's something that can't really be helped now although I can understand the frustration, whereas focusing on the next step and gaining your independence again will have you back on track in no time at all.
