Im not sure thats true. If you added Henry and Harry together Id bet thats miles ahead at the top probably followed by Oliver and Ollie or Jack and John.

All the variants of Muhammed total 7,957 (7806 if you ignore hyphenated names)

You need to bundle the like of Harry/Henry/Oliver in together to top that, they're nowhere near individually.

Harry & Henry - 4289
Oliver/Ollie/Olly - 4071
Jack/John/Johnny - 2379

It's not even close.

Every single person?
Does that not mitigate the purpose of a designation?

Genuine question. How would you ask for someone by name if everyone had the same name? I'm assuming there's a sub name or something?

Not every single person, every male child and not necessarily the given first name as I wrote earlier. So for example Wasim Akhtar who plays five a side footy on a Monday night is actually called Mohammed Wasim Akhtar but you'd never know as he's only known as Wasim or Was.

The Spanish have a similar thing with their naming customs, Rafael Nadal isn't actually his name its Rafael Nadal Parara, but hardly anyone knows.

The scores have been counted, we have a unanimous decision, the judges have it 14-10, 15-12 and 14-11, to the new CHAMPION OF THE WORRRRRRRLLLLLDD!!!! John.

The 'middle name' is effectively the primary name that's actually used day to day

How? Just pointing out that it doesnt surprise me. John used to be the most popular name at one time.

Are people afraid to mention what the bbc reported on today?

The dark side of this is: what happened to all the Jasons and Daves?

In the 80s, if you shouted "Dave", half the pub would turn around.
