Unless you side load it.

You've still got to buy Cerburus though and the only way you can do that is through Google Play so you'll still have 'installed' on there.

Could you possibly buy it through GP, take the installation files off your phone to your PC, uninstalled it then 'side load' back on?

Even then, there would still be something in Google Play saying you'd bought it wouldn't there?

well a caution is better than nothing I guess.

Glad you got the phone back OP, thanks for the making the last two days at work that little bit better :D

Can someone explain to me something. Everyone that is praising this Cerburus highly, what happens if the thief decides to simply wipe the phone like most thieves probably would?

1: Does "reset to factory settings" mean Cerburus survives?

2: Does updating firmware or reinstalling a ROM mean it survives?

3: What happens if you have a pin lock/swipe on the phone? Would the thief be able to do anything at all, even wipe it?

4: What happens if the thief turns the phone off fully straight away and then roots/wipes/flashes it on first boot up? Would Cerburus be able to log GPS/location or anything as soon as it boots even if going into a recovery/flashing program?

5: What happens if Cerburus gets activated and the phones has a mail account still working and receives an email like "Cerburus has been activated on your phone" which the thief sees?

There are people far more knowledgeable than me on this but this is what I've learned so far....

1: Does "reset to factory settings" mean Cerburus survives?

If you have a rooted phone, you can install it as a 'system app' in which case it would survive the factory reset/wipe. My only concern with that is you're encouraged to give Cerberus 'Device Administrator' status which is a setting that would presumably be lost and I'm not sure how well it performs without it.

2: Does updating firmware or reinstalling a ROM mean it survives?

The rest of your apps survive a firmware update don't they so I say yes to that. But if you were to completely format the internal memory and re-install the ROM I'd guess that would be like formatting a PC and re-installing the OS so I'd say you'd lose it in that case.

3: What happens if you have a pin lock/swipe on the phone? Would the thief be able to do anything at all, even wipe it?

Not from within the phone, but I'm guessing they could still format and wipe externally.

4: What happens if the thief turns the phone off fully straight away and then roots/wipes/flashes it on first boot up? Would Cerburus be able to log GPS/location or anything as soon as it boots even if going into a recovery/flashing program?

Very much doubt it.

5: What happens if Cerburus gets activated and the phones has a mail account still working and receives an email like "Cerburus has been activated on your phone" which the thief sees?

The key here is to use a separate e-mail account (set up one specifically for this I would say) that you don't store on your phone.

Ultimately, no computer or smartphone will ever be 100% impossible to protect in the right (or rather wrong) hands, but you have to remember that your average phone thief will be your 'rude boy innt' type who's technical knowledge doesn't extend passed using Facebook or Youtube. The people who have the technical know how and the smarts to format a phone don't need to nick phones because they are usually employed and not a 'chiller'.
