My sons new Elite is MUCH quieter than the PS3, I can barely hear it at all, my arcade on the other hand sounds like a jet engine :)

Yes, i've had 3 and found them all noisey when they was at full speed, even my girlfriend commented on it yesterday

Yeah two of my mates have PS3's and one is definitely noisier than the other... although all the consoles are loud compared with my PC :D

EDIT: thinking about it I would love to take the 360 apart and put it in a decent PC case:)

Hmm... mine's louder than a GameCube, PS2 slim, dreamcast and Wii but all of those were pretty much silent without a game running. I can tell the PS3 is on but only just.

Nobody is arguing? we're stating our opinions.

Some people take the internet far too seriously.

Have you listened to it after some use though? put a dvd on and wait about 30 mins then you can hear the fans kicking up to full speed

Yeah, it's not whisper quiet but with the sound on pretty low I can only just hear it at the end of a movie (upscaling enabled).

O and if the OP goes for a PS3 make sure you get the 60gb version so you can take advantage of the excellent PS1 & PS2 back catalouge, i'm enjoying resident evil 2 & MGS at the moment :D

Agreed. Backwards compatibility is a MUST if the PS3 is your only console.

The PS3 might be similar to the 360 then in having different drives which could be adding to the noise? my ps3 is across the other side of the room and is audiable all way through a movie(everything enabled :p)

Games do make the drive produce loud clicks and whirring occasionally on the PS3's I came across but I've never had that with DVDs where the drive noise is only slightly louder than the fan noise.

To stick another point in here, the PS3 is MUCH quieter then any 360. My premium and 60gb PS3 are both on the same glass stand, plenty of ventilation for both and i can't actually hear the PS3 at all. Completely silent at the dashboard. 360 is bad at dashboard but the disc drive can get really noisy.

TBH, this doesn't affect me at all becuase of the distance and the sound from speakers, but it may be a problem for someone else. :(

PS3's are only £250 now?!
Wow!

Yep, can get the 40gb model for £250 which is a hell of a lot better than it was. If it had some more games I would consider it the better buy.

Saying that the lack of backwards compatibility in the newer ones sucks, some games I would have loved to play (when I eventually get a PS3).

£250?! Ahhh darn it if only I got a cash refund and ordered one fron the net instead! Paid £320 with Uncharted. :(

Anyhow, I forgot you can upgrade the hard drive! Phew I was thinking of somehow the 40GB became used up I'd be screwed, I'll just slip in a £50 160Gb or so.

B/C ain't too big a deal to me, I've got no need to play any PS1/PS2 games but I agree if the PS3 is your only console it certainly appeals to try get one of the models with B/C.

and as for noise, mine gets a bit loud-ish after gaming for a bit, certainly not annoying when the TV volume is on, even with low volume you can barely hear it.

With respect, may I suggest you do try moving the PS3 to another place, just to try, with regard to breathing space?

If you have, then never mind, I'm not trying to argue.

When I had mine under the TV, in my TV stand, with, as I thought, plenty of breathing room, after the upscaling update, if I tried to watch a DVD, after 15 mins or so, the fan kicked up to what people have been referring to as level 3. It was an awful whooshing noise, that was really audible over the sound of the movie.

Taking the PS3 out sorted it.

So I bought one of those stands, to stand it on its side, and at worst, it got to level 2 during the middle of summer, and all through the winter, the fan stays on "level 1" which kicks in 10 mins or so after starting the movie.

As I say, no disrespect to you, as I know you got your 1st PS3 around the same time I did, but if all yours have been noisy, and mine was, until I moved it out on its own, on its side, then it's possible repositioning yours could help?

V1N.

They are? I just read the list and I don't think so.
Look at some respected review sources and you'll see many of those games don't feature that highly anyway.
