this processor any good?

there was no cpu in the board, how can i flash it before cpu goes in? the mobo wasnt brand new and i dont know what was in it before i purchased it, it was part of a new computer that got damaged in transit, can i put cpu in so i can get into bios then flash it?

I very much doubt that it will have a bios that supports these new cpu's. You are going to have to buy or borrow a cpu to flash it. G3220's have been going in our MM for around £25.

I was doing some research on this too,and stumbled across this post on overclock.net:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1493903/...-score-matching-stock-7850k/240#post_22402954

So,this is why I was asking you about the CPU last time.

We need to see if Intel have been nice about the Pentium - I know that MSI have some B85 based overclocking motherboards for the Pentium dual core they hope to release. So they have probably found a workaround for the block Intel put on the workaround for the block Intel put on overclocking with lower end chipsets.

Send me one of these new cpu's and i will be happy to try it out. :D

I was just reporting what he said - he tried his Core i5 4670K and it didn't work.

Saw this on TPU:

http://www.techpowerup.com/202040/l...ersary-edition-oc-on-some-msi-h97-boards.html

MSI also mentioned some B85 ones too recently. Might be a be a new way around the lock out??

However, its just typical of Intel - they screwed over Nvidia so they stopped making chipsets(but ended up having to pay over a $1 billion after Nvidia won the court case against them),meaning they can end up doing stupid things like this since they have a monopoly now.

Maybe, they will be nice and enable the relevant part of the microcode on the G3258. I don't see it consuming any more power than a Core i7 4770 at stock even when overclocked, even if Intel are "worried" lower end motherboards would not be enough for one of the Core i7s overclocked.

it supports the 4th gen asus website shows the cpu support list but it does state to even beside the g series chips to flash to latest bios before using the them

i dont have a cpu atm that i could put in it just to flash the bios im buying brand new cpu and wont know till i get one and im not sure if the new bios has even been flashed to my board yet

How about just wait a bit longer?? Haswell Core i3 CPUs have popped up in the cleareance section for around £50.

im not sure i want to get i3 now until i do a bios update on my new mobo incase it wont work need to know what cpu works with my mobo out of the box and without the bios update

try it first it might work,if gigabyte you can more than likely get a modded bios that uses an older unblocked cpu microcode over on tweaktown forums

I don't know anyone modding those, but the actual bios chips pull out so can be replaced

if it supports the Pentium aniv out of the box with no bios update then you should be ok,they will probably try and block it with future bios's idk

i cant seem to get the answer i need as to which one of the supported processors for my board works with non updated bios

Huh  Why would they block it?

This all depends on how updated the BIOS is. As you can see from the support page here, it looks like there's been 5 BIOS updates for your board.

For the latest chips including the Pentium anniversary you'll need the latest bios version 0904, download here - link

This was released on 26/5/14 so unless you've very recently got the board it's unlikely to have this BIOS revision installed.

You could try buying the chip, it may POST and if so the chances are you'll be able to update it to the latest BIOS, but obviously this is a risk and by the sounds of it a risk you can ill afford to try.

You could always buy a cheaper CPU like the Pentium G3220 that's been supported since the first BIOS and then update from there, although that kinda defeats the object of keeping costs down.

I'll be honest with you the anniversary Pentium is really suited to a Z97 board that will really get the most out of it when overclocked as that's what it's been designed for. It seems a bit of a waste to slap it in a H81 based board.

Like others have mentioned you'd probably be better off looking for an older i3 chip like the 4130 or 4350, at least you'll know these will definitely work as they've been supported from the first released BIOS.

no one knows till its actually released, usually theres bios updates on asus website for your model of mb stating support for new cpu ect

they can block it if its not officially supported by intel, only z97 should allow ocing, they already supposedly blocked 4770k oc'ing on b85/h81/h87

i would be happy if i can get the 4130 or 4350 without updating my bios just to get me up and running then do the bios update. if they have been supported since the 1st release bios then i will go with either one im happy now at least now i know i can use an i3 im happy :)

Yeah the 4130 and 4350 have been supported since the original BIOS version 0211, in fact quite a few CPU's (inc i5's & i7's) have been supported since this BIOS. Have a look on this page to see exactly which processors will work fine on version 0211 :)

thank you for the help nice to know i have the option for i5 to work out of the box lol ! just want to get my new rig up and running :D

Its a microcode lockout. One of our own forum members managed to overclock their Core i5 4670K on a non Z series motherboard, but someone on overclock.net OTH could not.

ATM,its hard to say whether Intel has enforced this with the Pentium or not,or whether the motherboard companies have found another workaround.

that's what im confused about, how can they store it on the cpu? it has to be mb bios? and that can be worked around

Like I said pastymuncher could overclock his Core i5 4670K and another chap on overclock.net could not.

Microcode is something integral to the CPU and many chips:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcode

MSI touted some budget overclocking B85 motherboards for the Pentium dual core so there must some new kind of exploit.

call of duty, counter strike, watchdogs, typical shoot em ups :D

The Pentium dual core is a definitely a no no if you are looking at Watch Dogs.

Even when overclocked it is horrible it seems in the game.

I would say at least a Core i3 then or the AMD equivalent(FX6300).
