This thread is about Reddit actively trading irrefutable child porn.

I'm not suggesting anything of the sort.

Why do you care about the censorship of questionable material involving underage individuals?

This is not about a slippery slope of censorship, this seems to be about people justifying their "right" to view or collect pictures and videos of children.

never actually visited reddit, i always thought it was some sort of news site :o

While this thread could paint it in somewhat of a bad light (if you ignore the second post), Reddit is essentially a collection of (independently moderated) communities. If you have a free framework where anyone can create one then of course you're going to get a few questionable ones. But conversely, you're also going to get a lot of amazing ones (some i'd say are second only to ourselves ;)). For instance:

http://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/

Most of the offending sub-reddits are way off in the periphery, you can choose what ones you subscribe to, and anyone can make a sub-reddit and it's self-policed with moderators and a voting system, so the majority of normal people will never come close to that stuff and assume that it's policed and moderated. I'm subscribed to science, news and games related sub-reddits, it's an incredible portal to find the best bits of the web, depending on what your subscribed to.

The reaction I'm seeing here is a bit like "Hey! there are nasty pictures on the net, SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING" I'm not sure how much of this is sarcasm.

Reddit is very similar to OCUK, we have an images thread, videos, and we try to stick to topic threads to keep things neat. So does reddit, on a larger scale.

I'm glad reddit removed jailbait, and I want stricter policies too.

Im quite surprised at the number of people here who almost seem to be defending the right to view/store pictures of young people.

A "normal" person in my eyes is perfecty reasonable having pictures of their own children. Regular folk wouldnt dream of having pictures of other children at their disposal. Even if it was Children of close friends. Its downright weird.

Just because it might be legal for someone to have pictures of a teen fully clothed, why in gods name would anyone want to?

Only a career which is relevant to children could really justify it. Even then, stockpiling images or videos would have to be monitored in my eyes.

Reddit is the 50th most visited site on the web - 99.99% of people going on there are like me - people looking for interesting stories / funny pictures of cats / interesting discussion.

I'm glad they took the step to shut those sub-reddits down, there is no place for that on the site. However suggesting it is some sort of child porn website is madness.

Yea but this is not children, this is teen age girls under the legal age in some countries and not in other countries. They are full clothed and more often than not the images were taken by the girls themselves. In this sense it is kind of unique. I would not go around saying that it is a collection of images of children, but if you class it as that, then I won't argue with you. Thing is with this sort of thing, you can't give an opinion that is not "oh this is terrible close it down" or you get seen as a peado. I just think people over react to it. I am on reddit quite a bit and was aware of the whole episode on tv where a girl's picture went on to the internet and it changed her life for the worse. That sucks and I wouldn't recommend any girl upload pictures of themselves on to the internet or guys.

But then if you take the internet out of it and say a older guy was collecting teen fashion magazines, i am not sure what i would think...

There is nothing wrong with an open community, thats why I like Reddit, it's hilarious and I check it several times a day, the ability to open a subreddit on any subject is great. I do agree though that it needs firm but fair moderating, which you can see hasn't happened quickly enough, jailbait was around for a long time, but when they decided to close it you'd have thought that was the time to make changes to their small rule book but they clearly missed that opportunity to rid or highlight what isn't acceptable. Better late than never but don't tar the website as a whole when as previously mentioned its a collection of open communities, reddit.com is just the main portal which highlights top rated posts of these subs.

I'm kind of surprised that reddit didn't have a stricter policy on reported images. If an image was reported for something illegal then it should surely get removed immediately, I didn't realise it was up to the subreddit moderators to be decided whether its allowed or not. There should be a group of admins working for reddit who sift through reported posts, rather than just having subreddit moderators who are going to have a bias when it comes to sections like jailbait.

That said reddit isn't a bad website. Like people have already said, there are going to be some dodgy areas on a website where anyone can create a subforum. I'm not sure how some still exist, and why there isn't a team of moderators who go around removing dodgy content.

The amount of jailbait reddits that exist is pretty shocking, and it's good that the situation has been made public so that the illegal subforums can be shut down. I still don't think reddit is anywhere near as bad as 4chan, though, /b/ is messed up -.-'

The best thing about this has been the outing of libertarians trying to justify child porn with "freedom!" and "ah but its only softcore!", including in this thread.

Seems like its just an attack on reddit tbh. "jailbait" is all over the net, almost every site you visit has it. Its just pics of teenage girls fully clothed, but as it has the words 'jailbait' stamped on the pic its suddenly child porn .

You're right, lets ban weird fetish websites and gore websites too just because you think they're morally wrong.

Any portrait artist in existence? People with photos from their friends?

I have many pictures of animals, doesn't mean I'm a zoophile.

What on earth?

In case a thought crime was committed?

Softcore does not mean non-sexual...

They already did under the law against extreme porn. Laws in the shambles of a country that is the UK, are not based on logic and ethics, but pure tyranny of the majority morality.
