Those that used to skateboard

Ah the skateboard, never has a more juvenile and utterly ridiculous mode of transportation ever been devised.

I'm not bitter, honest.

Anyone that used to skateboard in the past and ended up quitting for whatever reason. Do you ever feel like you are missing out and that you would love to get back to skating to relive the good old days?

Every time I come across a half decent skate video on youtube etc I really want to go outside and skate even though I don't have a board any longer.

It's actually getting to the stage that I'm thinking of getting a new setup for next year and heading up to the new skatepark they've built in Belfast.

I think I'll always be a skater at heart, no matter how sappy, retarded etc it sounds :D

¬.¬

Yeah... I miss it. I was never very good but always had fun, going to different spots... good times man :)

Still got my deck, probably break a leg if I tried again :p

I used to skateboard when i was 14-16, then i jumped on a snowboard and am still doing it 10 years later (roll on Scottish winter). I agree with the comments above about hard to master and any adult on a skateboard look's out of place unless they're a pro or at a high level so i won't be taking it up again.

Yes thought of it a few times actually..! Used to skate in Rampage both belfast and bangor and even the oldschool park in ballygowan way back.

Sometimes in town around the waterfront years before before the custom house square was made.

Was amazing fun at the time and would love to get a new setup and have a go, would be much cheaper than the the motorbike building and racing..!!

I completely miss it. My deck is collecting dust!
There's not really much for skaters in my area any more since they demolished our only close skatepark (where i live).

But I do still sometimes skate down to the shop to grab whatever. Just miss skating with all my friends.

I'm getting back into skateboarding now after about a 5 or so year absence when I got an apprenticeship and started going out near enough every day on the **** with mates and a load of parties. It's the best sport i've ever done, bit of a long winded explanation but if you were into skateboarding like me I think you'll understand...

1) Travelled the world skating and meeting loads of amazing people. Went all over from Marseilles to Barcelona (and all of U.K) skateboarding in some of the worlds best/most renowned skate spots.

2) Met some amazing people that I would have never met. Formed long term friendships and if i'd like to say, go to Marseille tomorrow I know I can rely on a mate to put me up in his house free of charge at the drop of a hat. At home me and my mates used to skate. At the start there were loads of us, some dropped out but all of us still kept in touch and went out drinking together. It was and is basically like a big family that stick in a pack and help each other out if anything cracks off.

3) Should have been at the top really but the euphoria once you land something that you've been learning for a while. Don't want to brag but skateboarding came naturally to me whereby I had good balance and I learned tricks quickly so it only made me want to learn/progress more. It's even better when you're doing tricks on bigger ramps like skating vert. I nearly swallowed my heart the 1st time I dropped in on a vert pipe. :D

4) There was no discrimination or racism of any kind. Seriously, when you skate you put all differences aside and just get on with everyone. Can't explain it but everyone just root's for each other like when you're trying new tricks, everyone just gets along and it's amazing.

When you properly get into skateboarding it becomes more than just a sport, it becomes a part of your life. When I started out and was at school all I could think about was getting home, getting changed, meeting up with everyone and just go somewhere to skate and have a good time. Good thing is a load of my old mates from years back still skate, one of them is managing 2 companies and their respective riders ( Heather & Unabomber skateboards) and the other has just done a spotlight in Sidewalk magazine so i've been fortunate enough so be around some amazingly talented people that i've known for years that still skate. I've started recently again about 2 or so months back and i've still got all my mini ramp stuff but my street stuff is rusty. Learned frontside 5-0's at the House in Sheffield a week or so back and all the old stuff is still there like bricking my pants when trying it and the amazing euphoric feeling of finally landing it and learning something new.

Flippin' heck, nearly a life story there!

Used to skateboard every hour of sunlight every day I wasn't at school or working.. we could do many basic street/freestyle tricks though it did take hours to learn each one, could get reasonably good at it. I was only average compared to some of my mates, I only went on a half-pipe ramp a couple of times though stevenage and knebworth bowl parks were fun. Witnessed a couple of nasty injuries there though.

Later in life I tried my hand at inline skating; learned from that, that falls are a lot harder now, much more punishing and so I let them gather dust for a few years.

A few months ago I started to gave it another crack, and have been recreationally skating for fitness (5km-10km per session around Dorney Lake) as well as ice skating lessons, so that I could round off the forms of skating I never did to a good standard as a kid.

Since regaining my balance and muscle memory for such things, I could probably give skateboarding another go but don't really have desire to do so, happy to stick with the inlines and ice for now instead (though I've banged my knee up doing that already and it's taking forever to heal).

For reference, my skateboarding days were around the ages of 12-15. Wrong side of 35 now for the ice and inlines.

I'm 37 and last skated about 4 years ago. I built a mini ramp in my garden and promptly fell through it having used the wrong type of ply:p I was doing a lot of mountainboarding and longboarding around that time though.

I've skated on an off since I was about 10 with the last 4 years being the longest break. I was best when I was about 17/18 but street skating was nowhere near as technical then.

I love skating but it hurts and I've pretty much channelled all of that into snowboarding and to a lesser extent wakeboarding.

I used to skateboard when I was a teenager, lent my board to a friend and never saw it again, thus I gave up lol. Now at 24 and over 16 stone, I doubt I'd be able to do it again lol

I used to when I was 14-17. Loved every second of it, until I grew out of it. And yes I would love to get on the old board again, but I don't know anyone who does it anymore.

That's all I did when I finished school. Now I just finish work and come on the computer or go to the pub. I miss the freedom of it all, and an excuse to get out of the house.

Same.
