I'm getting back into skateboarding now after about a 5 or so year absence when I got an apprenticeship and started going out near enough every day on the **** with mates and a load of parties. It's the best sport i've ever done, bit of a long winded explanation but if you were into skateboarding like me I think you'll understand...
1) Travelled the world skating and meeting loads of amazing people. Went all over from Marseilles to Barcelona (and all of U.K) skateboarding in some of the worlds best/most renowned skate spots.
2) Met some amazing people that I would have never met. Formed long term friendships and if i'd like to say, go to Marseille tomorrow I know I can rely on a mate to put me up in his house free of charge at the drop of a hat. At home me and my mates used to skate. At the start there were loads of us, some dropped out but all of us still kept in touch and went out drinking together. It was and is basically like a big family that stick in a pack and help each other out if anything cracks off.
3) Should have been at the top really but the euphoria once you land something that you've been learning for a while. Don't want to brag but skateboarding came naturally to me whereby I had good balance and I learned tricks quickly so it only made me want to learn/progress more. It's even better when you're doing tricks on bigger ramps like skating vert. I nearly swallowed my heart the 1st time I dropped in on a vert pipe.
4) There was no discrimination or racism of any kind. Seriously, when you skate you put all differences aside and just get on with everyone. Can't explain it but everyone just root's for each other like when you're trying new tricks, everyone just gets along and it's amazing.
When you properly get into skateboarding it becomes more than just a sport, it becomes a part of your life. When I started out and was at school all I could think about was getting home, getting changed, meeting up with everyone and just go somewhere to skate and have a good time. Good thing is a load of my old mates from years back still skate, one of them is managing 2 companies and their respective riders ( Heather & Unabomber skateboards) and the other has just done a spotlight in Sidewalk magazine so i've been fortunate enough so be around some amazingly talented people that i've known for years that still skate. I've started recently again about 2 or so months back and i've still got all my mini ramp stuff but my street stuff is rusty. Learned frontside 5-0's at the House in Sheffield a week or so back and all the old stuff is still there like bricking my pants when trying it and the amazing euphoric feeling of finally landing it and learning something new.
Flippin' heck, nearly a life story there!
