Thoughts on BF3 and origin ?

Apart from the massive fail when Origin's activation servers went down, I don't have many major issues with Orgin itself.

However its integration with BF3 is completely pointless.

They had the chance to properly integrate Battlelog into Origin, using the overlay, but it loads in a completely separate browser. It's obvious the Origin requirement for BF3 is something that was tacked on just to force people to install Origin.

The lack of integration even goes into the friends list. Unlike Steam where the friends list is global across all Steam games, you have to manually import your friends from Origin into BF3. As I said, for BF3, Origin is essentially pointless.

I don't think they are 'hurting pc gamers' any more than games that force people to use Steam. People have become remarkably accepting of Steam over the years but if you think back to the HL2 release was that really any different? Forcing people to install some unnecessary bit of bloat if they wanted to play a new AAA title.

I can see why EA have forced us to use it everytime we want to play bf3. As long as origin works then it is not to much of a problem. It was fine for me until last night spent 30 minutes failing to connect to servers.

No issues with either. Only thing i would like is for battlelog to allow you to alter settings and weapon load outs outside the game. For me orgin just sits there like steam. No loss for anyone.

Origin - (Hallowed are the ORI)

First impressions - Clunky and hard to use.

Unlike steam which has a single application the "wise" folks at EA thought that
that was not complicated enough. They decided to split it all up.

So now what happens is you install origin (Hallowed are the ORI) , create and register
an account with them , hoop 1 jumped through.

Then you install the game itself , hoop 2 jumped through.

It then installs some DRM protection check software , this checks to make sure you are
allowed to play the game , hoop 3 jumped through.

Now this is the weird part that I cannot understand, when you launch the game eg BF3
from Origin (Hallowed are the ORI) , it then launches the game ... NOT , nope it
opens your web browser.

It then installs the game launcher addon into your browser , hoop 4 jumped through.

It then installs the audio chat addon into your web browser, hoop 5 jumped through.

You then try and launch the game , and it updates itself , hoop 6 jumped through.

Now IF I just want single player I can just launch and play.
IF I want to use multiplayer in any usefull manner then......

So where steam has a single friends list design, EA like to be different.
So I want to add my friend , I enter this name into origin and hit add , he accepts
and now we can see each other .... in origin ...... , hoop 7 jumped through.

Friends in origin (Hallowed are the ORI) , are not friends in BF3, so I now have to
do the same thing in my web browser and import my friends, hoop 8 jumped through.

Now I can play some co-op with my mate , we create party and launch the game ....

So to re-cap, you need to have:

Origin (Hallowed are the ORI)
web browser
Game Launcher exe
Audio chat exe
your game running

The steam way of doing things is much less complicated and a lot less pain in the a55
In its current form it is a bit crap to say the least.

When going through all this last night all I could think about was the scene from Zoolander
where they had him dancing in a monkey suit......

Is there any particular reason why you cant join a queue to get on a server? Every single one seems to be full and it took me frickin' ages to actually find a server with a free spot and then get on it before someone else.

It's weird than your installation routine was that bad.

I already had the plugin from the beta, so could skip that step. And also already had Origin installed (pretty painless installation). I just entered my code, it downloaded, installed, and away I went. Easy peasy. Just like Steam pretty much.

As for people being disappointed/complaining: try to stop listening to the hype about the game. Or maybe, don't expect so much. Everyone had the chance to play the open beta, so could have easily got an idea what it was like from that. I swear, that every big title PC game that comes out, people hype it up so much, that no matter how good it is, it just falls flat. It's like the final Harry Potter movie. Everyone was making big waves about it, but when I watched it, whilst it was good, I felt that it lacked something. We are doing exactly the same with games now. Expect a bit less, and you might for once be happy.

I guess so.

It's just a shame we can't just install & go nowdays.

On another note, I seem to have two functioning installations of the game:

Bf3 is fine as a game so is using origin. The battlelog is ok.

The only thing i would moan about would be the server browser, I find it a little annoying how i have trouble getting in some servers (prob just a teething bug and will get sorted out) Also the time it takes to actually join a server. Can take up to 3 mins or so to connect and start playing

The Campaign is a bit of a pain. In some of the levels its too dark to see where to go and I'm sick of getting bumped out of cover by the NPC'S.

Battle log is utterly retarded, spend ages loading the engine every time you connect to a server, fails to connect, pick another server, reload the engine all over again. WTF is wrong with an in game browser like EVERY OTHER GAME EVER MADE!!!!

You do know that the quickest way to join servers back in bf2 days was through IE/firefox pluggins on sites like bf2 tracker. I haven't come across a single bf game with a good ingame browser, except bf3 which hasn't got one.

I must be the only person in the entire world where I just put the disc in selected BF3.exe and it worked.
Installed no problems, runs no problems, plays no problems.

What am I doing wrong?

My thoughts on origin and BF3:

Low cpu usage program, Doesn't hastle me with zillions of updates like steam when i log on, And fast downloads dispite millions of people downloading Battlefield 3 at the same time.

Can't complain.
