Thoughts on Silver Arrow?

I just ordered one from this website. I use an overclocked AMD 1100T BE at 3.8GHz (up from 3.3) with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Rev.2 cooler and its just not doing the business. Checking core Temp after a game, says my temps while in game were running at 69 degrees c.

(I hear that's not so good. Luckily I haven't had any problems with BSOD or whatever I just decided to get a better cooler.)

So I was thinking about getting the Corsair H80 First, Then it was the Thermaltake Frio, Then it was the Noctua D14

Anyway I saw the reviews regarding the sound on the H80, (too loud, i wanted something quiet.) - The reviews on the D14 (too ugly and too big for me.)

And finally the Thermaltake Frio (Seemed too cheapy and similar to my old cooler).

So I finally decided on the Silver Arrow because i like the way it looks and it benched slightly better than the D14. which is good! (But I didn't realise it was A BIG as the D14!) I was going for future proof performance when i ordered the cooler, that was the plan anyway.

So I am also wondering, How is the Silver Arrow IRL? and it does come with the 2x 140mm Fans included right? Link here: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-078-TR

And will it fit inside a Fractal Designs R3 case? Apparently the D14 will, I read somewhere so I am hoping this will as well...

Thanks all!

The Silver Arrow will fit in a Fractal R3, yes.
It does also come with the 140mm fans pictured in the description.
My previous setup used the IFX-14, which is the older revision of the Silver Arrow, in an R2 cooling a 1055T, did a great job too. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I bought one , came on firday, pretty tricky to fit, quite awkward.

I have a fractal design r3 as well, fits in yes, but the side panel wont go on, top of the fans in the way.

Using mine on a i2500k

^ Arrrghh. ><

I am not sure about leaving the side off my case all the time, wont more dust get into it!? Then there would be no point of having the installed dust filters, and also I smoke near my PC and if it was being left open....

This is not good.

Ok I have an idea, have you considered turning the fans sideways so the flat surface is against the ram and the side of the case? It's the extra curve from the shape of the fan in the way you have set it out which is impeding you, right?

I just checked and there seems nothing stopping you doing that and it should be able to fit into the case fine after that. When that's done the Fans will be flush with the top of the heatsink and you should be able to close the case.

Nice, thanks guys, also if you do manage to swap the fans around make more pics in this thread and let me know. :) i think the R3 is pretty industry standard as far as dimensions go, and the other poster mentioned the heatsink by itself fitted (IFX-14), so you shouldn't have any problems? i measured mine, i have only like 2mm clearance lol

Still hope it fits, it should fit. Barely... Barely.

What motherboard and RAM have you got mate? Trying to work out if the SA will fit on RipjawsX on a P8P67 PRO. Cheers.

Man that looks pretty awesome. Would the ram get sufficient cooling though? Wedged down under the fan might not get any airflow at all

ram doesnt need super cooling really, with that said, the push pull of the fan would drag cold air from the memory directly into the fan which is sitting on top of it anyway.
if you have decent intake from the front, the flow of the case would cool it additionally.

Mine was the same, unbelieved exspecially my biggest case Antec 1200 as the side panel won't go in cos of the fans get in the way, I have to use Apache 2 x 120mm fans instead and it was all ok for the side panel to go in. 2 x 120mm Apache fans is the same temperature as the Thermalright 2 x 140mm but the 140mm is more quieter than 120mm fans thought.

4.3GHz 2 x 140mm temp 53-58-61-56 noise level is extreme quieter (spin around 1150rpm)
4.3GHz 2 x 120mm temp 52-57-61-55 noise level is slightly not quieter (spin around 1374rpm)

You can use 2 x 120mm Apache fans instead then it will fit ok.

I dont see how anyone can say it fits when you cant get the side panel back on, you would have thought they would have put fans with it that did fit most cases on the market.
I take it the cases where you cant get the side panel back on are mid tower, is a full tower case much wider and would it fit in one of those with the panel in place

dont think the height/width are in relation to eachother. i have seen a lot of short fat cases and long thin ones. jusr as much as you get short skinny and tall fat cases. the reason the SA doesnt fit you case is nothing to do with them not making the fans to fit all cases, its becuase they designed the fans to be the right size to make the product work efficiently (and keep the costs down). they give you dimensions so its up to you to make sure it fits.

I replaced an Akasa Venom with the silver arrow; it knocked maybe 5 or so degrees off, but at such an improvement over the noise levels.

I run it with the adaptor/splitter PWM cable, so most of the time it's silent. When it's at full pelt, it's still barely audible. I found the Viper pretty out at full tilt.

Installation was a bit of a pain though. But worth it.

Cheers,

Rich
