Three times over the legal limit for cocaine?!

Awful story:

Luke Flanagan was three times the legal limit for cocaine when he smashed into Emma van der Avoird's Peugeot as she was taking her daughter Khiana to school.

But help me out GD

Cocaine is a class A drug. How can there be a "legal limit" that you can be over? Very confused.
drugs aside... this happened in 2008. how the hell did this take 15 years to get taken to court and a conviction?
presumably the family have had to live for 15 years with this guy walking around free. if he had been a bit older he may have died of old age before being done.

edit ignore i had a total senior moment !

Did you read the article? It happened 1 November 2021.

Luke Flanagan, 28, hit 55-year-old Emma van der Avoird's Peugeot 2008 as she was taking her daughter Khiana, 16, to school at around 8am on 1 November 2021, before it burst into flames.

yeah i did . sorry brain fail, saw the pug 2008 and had mental flop.

the peugeot was on a different line to the 2008 and it seems i added an "in" into the sentence. a weak excuse i know (esp as the acutal date was written just after it)

Let's hope he's at least banned from driving for life.

At least he tried to get them out, as a mitigating factor.

I think the main issue was he was using his phone while driving, Cocaine wouldn't cause someone to drive into something, it's basically a strong stimulant.

Good on him for trying to get them out, and the fact he got burns shows it wasn't just a token effort... That said, using his phone while on cocaine and driving a van is just . Hope he has plenty of time to think about what he did and all the lives he's affected in prison.

But is does also make you more likely to speed, drive recklessly, and lose concentration, so it may well have contributed to what happened.

on the increasingly rare occasions I've been out on a Saturday night in the last couple of years, the real thing that hits you is the widespread use of cocaine

its increased ten fold from my main late 90's bopping days, its a serious concern in my eyes. It seems a lot more dangerous to go out now.

there have always been drugs IME. back in my going out in the city (manchester / chester / salford) days Acid, Speed and ecstasy use was widespread. out of all those drugs, cocaine, if it is actually cocaine it is probably less harmful than any of those drugs.

Agreed. I see people openly doing it in the crowd at gigs now. They don't even slink off to the toilets anymore

I never saw anyone on ecstasy cause much harm. They weren't the ones starting fights.

ecstasy is more about harm to self (if you have a bad reaction to it or the "quality" of the drug you take...... probably mostly same with Acid tho i could definitely imagine someone high on acid deciding they were the worlds best driver and giving it a go!.... but the effects of speed is largely comparable to cocaine (note my experience is limited but i do have some experience)...... but unlike cocaine its effects last a lot longer

So basically, cocaine use in so rife that lots of people were likely showing trace amounts in their bloodstream when being tested - So they had to set a limit to ensure convictions actually happened?

Horrible drug IMO. Turns people in to absolute ***** and usually much more aggressive.

I think this is the real problem here.

crashed into them while he using TikTok

I dont think he crashed due to being too out of it. The idiot was using Tiktok so not even looking at the road.

also being '3 times over the limit' might not necessarily mean he was impaired at all, just that there were traces in his system, the 'limit' is very very low as said to ensure convictions/rule out 2nd hand exposure

I would've thought that limit is set to quite a low level. So being three times over the limit is still relatively low is it not?

I know someone has posted the actual level, but I've got no idea what that translates to. Would a 'normal' line of coke put you way over to the limit?

Regardless, they guy's a tool and that jail term is a joke. Poor family.

So ecstasy is dangerous when it isn't ecstasy? Lol

I'm afraid you don't really know much about the topic, but assuming normal purity, and normal dosage, acid is the least harmful, followed by mdma, then quite a large gap where coke and speed are pretty terrible for you.
