Here's my first proper Thunderstorm for 2023! I had a crazy hailstorm today, everything went white and the Hail stones were huge!

My dad said they had some fairly heavy sleet with a bit of hail where they were in the south east, though nothing like that.

It was crazy! I could hear the thunder as it approached, but it was the roar of the hail which made me think uh oh that's something else!

I thought a bit of one of our brief rain spells this afternoon looked like it had some gloopy, defrosted snow.

No thunder though, we had one rumble on Monday or Tuesday.

When is peak thunderstorm season in the UK?

I would say really August and September, depending on the moisture but I’m just a punter. Anytime really when it’s hot during the day and the wind is blowing off the nearest sea.

eta, Roff or the like will be along to correct me :D

eta 2, as you are in Welling Rob the best storm spots I’ve seen around SE London is the hilly areas around Malling Halling (I think, is that the village with a couple of pubs and the ford?) for some reason they seem to roll in overhead around there and plenty of country pubs to enjoy it from!

Or for an easy view just head to Biggin Hill area on a stormy night you can see for miles both north and south.

Is this not totally abnormal weather for this time of year? Seems mad we had a storm in the middle of April just.

April showers are normal as are storms, but this was a very localized event due to such cold air aloft. Temp dropped to 1C! :D

Not worked out where they are coming from yet, but there's been a few rumbles of thunder heard in SO18 in the last ~20mins.

Noticed there's sleet or snow falling in mid Wales and up in Scotland.

This is a good site for looking at where thunderstorms / lightning is happening.

Due to Greta we can expect much more extreme weather variations which over a period of a couple of years or so will average out to be the average for the time of year.
So yeah the weather is rubbish this April
