Ok, we had the longest spell of heatwave in UK, but thunderstorms is normally happen in late evening as I haven't seen it for ages (the last one of the best electric storm back in 1990's) but since it only a few times.

Has thunderstorms lack in UK?

Had a cracking one last year which spanned over several hours, in fact I recorded it. :)
 
Havent really seen any thunderstorms, lightening down here in London myself and ive been here near on 20 yrs now.

Growing up in Canada, mother of god we used to get some tremendous lightening and thunderstorms. I remember one lightening strike that when it hit, counted it to be about a mile away was so brutal it actually shook the house:eek:. But i was in Canada last summer and we got some really hot, humid weather...hit about 38c in the day but late evening i was sat outside my brothers house having a cig and what a lightening and thunderstorm turned up...was pure awesomeness.

We have not had a really decent one, by UK standards, for a while in my area. Probably looking at least 4 years ago.

We heard it coming, so decided to go up beachy head & watch it. Was not the best idea ever, never ran so fast in me life!
 
Heatwave lol it's called summertime in any othe country besides England. In England you get a MET warning to take care in the heat...

Best one I seen was in Ecuador in the Amazon, we were in a hostel on a riverside and you could see it rolling in to the valley and the mountains and then it hit us and it was mental !!

There pet tarantula escaped that night too so we all didn't sleep well at all that night.

I remember reading that Thunder and Lightning was less common in cities because of the reduced charges between ground and clouds. I guess the wealth of grounded conductors must have something to do about it.
 
There where a few isolated thunderstorms today in SE England - some torrential rain and thunder near London/Surrey. These are of the home grow variety - the so called 'cap' on convection was broken and a few Cumulonimbus clouds formed quite quickly.

What we haven't seen for many years is a good old 'Spanish plume' event...during the 1980s and 1990s these would produce hours and hours of thunder and lightning, usually arriving late evening in Southern England and continuing all through the night moving north. I remember one night in the early 1990s when we had 'gunshot' thunder - and continous forked lightning - amazing!

I have seen some future models that indicate this type of scenario could happen next week and bring this hot spell to a classic and proper finish...it is inevitable. A long hot spell like this one without a thundery breakdown would be quite unlucky.

Being right on the Sussex coast and overlooking the English Channel has its advantages for lightning displays and storm watching...fingers crossed for next week.

I remember a night like that in 2001. It went on for what seemed like hours. Eventually it seemed to be fading into the distance when suddenly there was simultaneous lightning and thunder. A little end terrace house around the corner had taken a direct hit. It had to be totally demolished and rebuilt from scratch.
 
According to met office, there is increasing of severe thunderstorms heading toward UK next Thursday evening with 60% of severe storm could continue all night exspecially the south west, Wales and the Midlands. Can't wait!

 
Lincolnshire usually gets a few, along with long blackouts. Not had a storm so far this year, but there have been a few rumbles of thunder in the distance from time to time over the last few weeks.
 
It does seem strange that we haven't had one yet with how hot it has been, as its usually expected. There were some threatening clouds over London last night, but nothing much came of it.
