Time for a daily

He already has one of those.

By decent I meant something along the lines of a VAG 1.8T. They can be very economical cars with still a reasonable amount of power that doesn't become a pain to drive when you have a Evolution as your second car.

This for example is already £500 cheaper than the diesel PD150 he has been looking at. Looks a lot better condition. Has only 80,000 miles and doesn't have the ghastly alloy wheels. Will also do >35mpg on a run.

I don't understand why you would need a second car. The Evo is a 4 door saloon, it is practical and relatively comfy. Yeah the MPG is pants and servicing is high but these things come as part of the package.

Buying a 2K shed to save £50 a week will take a long time to repay itself and even when it does, there is the risk of something breaking plus there is now double the servicing, MOTs and insurance to consider.

Is the extra £50 in fuel a week for the EVO going to break you? After all that 2K cost for the shed can buy a lot of fuel for the EVO.

It makes perfect sense. I wouldn't want to be driving my pride and joy around in the slushy winter months when all sorts of bad news can happen. Also he is doing 20000 miles a year. Thats a lot of money in servicing plus 60,000 miles in 3 years is going to put a dent in it's value.

Scrap the diesel idea. Get something with a decent turbocharged petrol engine. A Saab 9-3 Aero or a Skoda Octavia VRS. They will both return decent MPG if driven the right way while still having the grunt if needed. Having a 150k+ mile diesel is just asking for problems. 2.5k with get you both of the mentioned in a petrol variant with less than 100k.

What happened to the Volvo in the end?

Volvo was my mums car.

As I said in my OP, the more I drive it, the less special it feels. If I drive an average car as a daily then the Evo will much more exciting when it does come out of the garage. It's not wholly a cost saving exercise, I make my money back on the fuel via expenses, it's more about keeping high miles off the Evo.

Another thing is the servicing, the Evo is every 4500 miles, at the current mileage less personal mileage, that's every 11 weeks or so.

Not to sound like a fool here but surely this is something you should have considered before buying the car?

Yes the car will feel less special but in a perfect world you would always want to drive the EVO over a lesser daily. So get your money's worth and enjoy it for what it is!

You sound like a workmate, he was sick of running his old but lovely C36 AMG Merc and bought an e46 330i to run as a daily.

The e46 is back up for sale as he found he is saving sod all!

I think you'll find you save nothing in the long run by buying an additional car.

I'd stick with what you have tbh, or, admit defeat and sell the evo and buy a replacement rather than a second car with all the extra outlay that goes with running two.

I've got a diesel Yaris as my daily when i couldn't justify (or afford) to keep piling 20k a year onto my scooby. I was worried that i'd hate the car/myself/throw myself off a bridge with driving a 1.4 (75BHP ZOMG!) dag dag around but i actually quite enjoy its lack of power and it does make the scooby feel very special when i drive it.

I also needed a 2nd car as i track the scooby and was starting to modify it so the risk of it being off the road for one reason or another was getting higher and i still need to be able to get to work. Its also amazing how often having another car is useful.

It was always my intention to get a second car in addition to the Evo, so trying to convince me to get rid of it and have just the one car won't work. Some people see sense in having two cars, others don't, that won't change.

Curveball here but I do a 40 mile each way mostly country roads and something that steers well and is cheap to run would be my choice so an MX5? You can enjoy the summer drive as well. Then you have your sensible 4 seater for the weekend?

I have an MG TF but buying a good one might be a bit of a lottery, mine does the job fine and 40 mpg.

I have thought about an MX5 but everything I have read suggests that they struggle to achieve 30mpg? Plus aren't they a little 'rattly' for a daily driver?

406 Coupe 2.2 HDI.

Great cars! You probably won't achieve 50 mpg but 40-45 easily.

Fabia vrs. I bought the wife one for commuting last year for 2.5k. Brilliant little car, cruise on at 70 is over 60mpg. Then when you fancy some twisty action it's good to go. It's not like my mk5 golf gti or r26 but it's still quick ish and good fun

Is that the 1.8 Toyota engine?

Not sure I'd want something so cramped for a daily, I'm much prefer something Golf/Leon sized, that way, any large items can go in with having the back seats down etc.

yeah the 140bhp.

I have driven a few mk3 MR2's and they are tiny, have no luggage space and are generally not what I'd consider a daily to an EVO.

The pre-cats can cause engine issues on early models too. Interior is horrific too!

Good steer though.

I said it before and will say it again. T-Sport Yaris. Ok, so they haven't the best of interiors or most powerful of engines, but they can put a grin on your face and handle well with some good suspension and tyres. They're economical and are cheap to run/maintain, and the engine is bombproof. Can be had for cheap now.

I was contemplating owning an Evo after the ATR, then I thought about it long term and it just wasn't financially viable. Great cars, but the servicing/keeping it in good nick/fuel costs would kill me. I actually thought about the same with the ATR, whilst it was a great car, I didn't enjoy driving it much.

The Yaris however was something I did love and it is a regret for me that I ever got rid of it. I wish I had kept it and supercharged it as then it would have been even more fun. Great small car.

The Yaris sports are great little cars. Brother had one for a couple of years and was full of fun down b roads but still held it's speed well on the motorway, plus 50-60mpg when driving normal.
