Time for a daily

You seem quite happy about the Golf/Leon diesel as being three right size etc but in my mind it fails a by a long way in that they are boring cars and you will fall asleep etc! Sadly I think that boring goes hand in hand with that size of car unless you want a hot model which may not get you 40mpg?

Do you need the space for the commute having a sensible 4 seater for the weekend? Was the evo comfortable enough? Or are you getting rid of the evo?

I'm really surprised the Mazda is rubbish on fuel!

Estate is an option, but something like a Leon or Golf has ample room in the back with the seats down.

I went to look at the Leon FR TDI 150. Great deep boot and seats folded which was also great. However I read there are problems with the 150 engine chocolate camshafts or something so avoided it. The Golf is also a good choice but I'd go with the 130.

Why not go for a golf/passat estate? Something boring/dull but atleast you will have the Evo to make up for it?

If that's the 130ish engine (which i think a 2001 is) then it's worth a look. Seems expensive to me but it's only £2kish anyway and tbh I have no idea of the early diesel values.
A 320td compact would undoubtedly be cheaper but You should be able to knock money off it anyway

I need something with a little bit of space, at least hatch sized so I can put the rear seats down and lug stuff around.

There's actually a surprising amount of useable space in a Yaris. We got a full-size bath in my old 2003 model with the boot shut when it wouldn't fit in the gf's Megane!

Just been looking at the figures, I *think* the Evo costs me just under £700 a month to keep on the road. I've made some assumptions with the servicing and tyres etc but I think it's a good ball park figure.

Looking at the numbers for a diesel doing 40mpg, my outlay would be £300 less than that, so £400. If that was a 50mpg car, that would be £350. So if it was a £3k car, it's more than paid for itself in 12 months, and I've not included depreciation on the Evo either or factored in clutch/flywheel at £800. I worked the cost of diesel out at £1.39, don't really know what it costs at the pumps atm.

So I think it is in my best interests to get something ASAP.

Interesting set of maths.

You appear to have ignored the fixed costs of keeping the Evo and also the variable costs associated with continuing to drive the Evo some of the time (Otherwise why bother with it).

I based fuel consumption on doing 1800 miles a month currently. I'd drop that by 1600 by not commuting. Of course I'm never going to get an accurate figure but I don't think I'm far off.

Even including buying the second car, insuring it, servicing and maintaining it etc? Genuinely very surprised if you get that sort of difference - even if you exclude much of the purchase cost and assume you'll get a lot of that back at some point.

Insurance and servicing/tyres has always wiped out the difference when I've looked in the past. Then again I've never had anything quite as maintenance/fuel heavy as an evo

It's a toss up between two cars so far.

1.8 TDCI focus and 2.0 TDCI Mondeo.

Any major problems with either engine to look out for?
