Time for a daily

So yeah bought the Focus.

Just sat and done some basic maths. On fuel alone, I've saved around £500 since purchase, so still some way off the £2500 the Focus cost (insurance, tyres etc) but it's getting there. I haven't added any other costs, for example the Evo would have had to had another service, including diff oils etc. Pretty convinced that I did the right thing.

That's not bad going. £2500 did this include Insurance, MOT/TAX, wear and tear costs that may need attention in the future for the Focus?

The car was £1900, tax was £120 from memory, £600 for insurance (still seething at that) and £300 tyres so £2500 is a little low, should have been close to £3000. It doesn't need servicing till February when I'll probably do it myself. I don't think it needs anything doing to it (touch wood). A mate of mine who is a mechanic had a good look round it and said it's in good condition.

When did you purchase it? You can get rough estimate with the mileage/use how much you'll save in how long. Plus weren't you looking to getting rid of the Evo for a M135i? Can you claim on fuel expenses or anything if it's a CC?

I bought it at the end of July. I am thinking of selling the Evo and using the cash raised to put in a savings account in preparations for buying a house when the new Government scheme comes out. Then lease something like an M135i but nothing's confirmed yet.

That would seem very sensible, but obviously circumstances change. Would you sell the Focus then? Or keep it to keep costs down on the M135i? Since, if you're going the finance route, you may as well make proper use out of the car.

That's how I see it.

I would keep the Focus and probably give it to Kirsty and sell her Civic.

You'd also free up some cash that way. Looks like a good call to me, but see how good a lease deal you can get on the M135. Hopefully things will go in your favour. Best of luck.

So yeah, got bitten the other week. The car has been using a little bit of oil, some 1 litre per 2000 miles so I wasn't too concerned. But it's not much of a smoker so I'd always wondered where it was going.

One morning when checking the lights I noticed a single front bulb had gone, I drive home in the dark so I went to Halfords that lunch time to get them to do it (in office clothes). The other had gone by the time I was there. Anyway, opened the bonned to be greeted by loads of oil everywhere. So into the garage it went. Turns out it was the crankshaft oil seal, and with the car having done 98000 miles I got them to change the cam belt and service it, so a lovely £460 bill. But it's back on the road now and it will hit 100,000 miles tomorrow. I've done almost 7,000 in three months so it was definitely worth getting it.
