Why not get a rat? They have much better temperaments than little dogs and they look a lot cuter!
On a slightly more serious note... generally small dogs are bitey/yappy and you'll be hard pushed to find one that isn't. My vet really likes Bijons, says they're really nice dogs but I've never met one myself so wouldn't know.

The only truly "cute" small dog around. The others ming hard, especialy pugs
When I was a boy, my family had a Cairn Terrier. Nice small dog, not a handbag dog. However, they can shed a lot. Hairy little beasties, with a heavy winter coat they shed. It's better to get someone who knows what they're doing to remove it at the right time of the year - in the wild, the dog would rub against stuff to help shed the winter coat. Some of your furniture would probably work for that, as would a roll on the carpet.

Ours was a sandy reddish colour. Nce little dog, very good with horses. They're good watchdogs, too.

Far, far too big. If we were after a dog that needed that much exercise we'd get a dalmation.
