Tip

I only tip if I get excellent service...

I find it hilarious people tip pizza delivery guys?! What service have they done? They're getting paid to deliver!!! You don't tip the postman do you? BAH! :p

considering (first hand witness here ;) ) that spit and worse routinely gets into food, its always worth building up a rapport with your servers, even if you don't tip them.

Personally I hate the way tips are nearly expected. Person X gets paid Y. The tip Z is if they do something kickass, not for doing their job.

tips should be for outstanding service , something above and beyond the call of duty.
tipping anything else degrades the quality of service and as you said they get paid for that. If it wasn't for perpetual tippers the service quality in the UK would be far far higher.

this.

if someone asked me for a tip i think id laugh...

winky smiley suggests you did it.
it probably happens at a lot of crappy places wether you tip or not.

Surprisingly, its the higher end of the catering industry that it happens. Its disgusting, and I find it appalling, but believe me when I say it happens.

My winky smilie stops me having to elaborate what can be introduced to food, stuff i'd rather not describe...

This.

I tip so little (if at all) that a waiter tipped ME once out of protest. Since I always go to the same restuarants in my area, I know most of the waiters now and know who deserves a tip or not. The English waiters act like they're doing you a favour when serving you, they get **** all from me. The foreign waiters tend to make an effort giving good service. For them I leave a tenner usually.

This is indeed true, althougth I am guilty of tipping most of the time.

One thing I do not like it a resturant adding a service charge. If they do this, I do not tip, although I also do not know where the service charge goes. Even with the changes in the laws, it can be used to top up wages to a minimum. I wish they were forced to say if tips were additional or part of wages on a menu.

one more thing - tipping bar staff - I never bothered with this in the UK until I started going to a very busy bar near work - tis a long wait to get served and the queue goes about 3-4 people deep - there is a girl who serves the tables in there and I tipped her when she brought some drinks round when I was at a table with some mates from work - now whenever I go in there, even if I've not got a table she always comes round to where I'm standing to see if I want her to fetch anything from the bar - get served instantly and it costs like an extra quid on a round that perhpas cost £20-£25......

In Canada it's customary to tip the bar staff as well if you want to get served in a reasonable length of time i.e. they'll come up to you relatively quickly the first time and then you'll be expected to chuck something in their tips jar/plate if you want to keep getting good service. I'd assume it is much the same in America.

It depends where I am and how good the meal/service is but I usually tend to leave a tip that is anywhere between 10-15% or sometimes just whatever I've got in the way of change.

As I understand it some may argue:

Then what is it that they are getting paid for?

The Bella Italia staff at Duke St, London seem more than comfortable asking for more money.

Me: "Can I pay by card"
Him, as he hands me the card reader: "Sure. Any tip today?"
Me: "No, thank you."
Him: "Are you sure?"
Me: "Pretty sure."

I paid for the food and left.

What are your thoughts on "tips"?

Cheeky sod! I provide a service in my job and no-one tips me. I don't agree with it atall. I can't wait to go to America.

I have never in my life tipped, and don't plan on ever doing so.

I go beyond my call of duty every day to help customers out. I've never been tipped, the most ive got was a hug :p

When people start tipping me, i will start tipping them.

Sounds fair to me.

If someone asks me to tip them, ill get up and leave.

I provide a service for millions of people in my job and I never get tipped either  . What I do get is people sucking their teeth at us when we have a signal failure or a job overrun.

If I got served enough god damn food I'd tip, why are the portions dire! I eat in mostly, very rare I go out for a meal.

If you want to learn about tipping go to Morocco. They ask and even recommend how much to give. Everything is done for a tip/present.

No it's not, it's just the tourists that fall for the "free" presents that think that. It happens all over Africa and other places and is essentially swindelling not tipping.

At my local curry house I asked the waiter if he gets all the tips

He told me that the tips are used to subsidse the minimum wage and only when they exceed this do they get them, well that is the theory but in practice he said they never do

so I have now stopped tipping there

in the US, a tip (10% of summit) is already included on the bills (final amount) in some places. Witnessed it myself in New York.

yea its ridiculous, a tip is suposed to be a small ammount maybe the price of a drink.

its got completely out of hand and will probably just get worse if it carries on.

also if im in a busy club/bar and people are getting served faster than me because i dont tip and they do i will leave and not go back.
thankfully it doesnt seem to happen up here

I have this argument with my GF's family all the time, if they go to a pub meal, they will all chuck 50p/ £1 in the kitty, leaving around a £5 tip, even if the service is rubbish! It drives me insane as they all look at me like a tight git for not tipping

I will only tip if I get fantastic service

When I'm out for a nice meal at my favourite restaurant, I always get good service. Sure, I could be tough and say "they're doing the job they are paid to do, why should I subsidize their wages?", but the service is always good so we all chip in £1-2 extra, so makes a nice tip for them.

Other than that, I don't believe in tipping as a matter of course. Restaurants that actually add a service charge and fluff right off! The thing about tipping, for me, is that it is MY decision. A tip stops being a tip when it is virtually demanded by the company (i.e. being included in the bills etc).
