Hi guys,

normally when i go to a restaurant I usually tip.

But last night I went out and got a bit drunk, and went for an Indian with 3 others.

Now the service was crap, the food wasn't great and the restaurant was abit pants in general

When it came to the bill of £50 (we were hungry :p) none of us had enough cash between us to cover it, so i payed via card and my mates gave me their share of the bill.

Now when paying via the card I saw "Gratitude" and It wouldn't let me pass until i entered anything.

So I put 1 penny in as I didn't feel like tipping as it had been a crap meal all in all

And one of my mates said, "how much did you tip?"

"nothing. it weren't great tbh"

And my mate couldn't quite hack the fact I didn't want to tip.

Now I thought I was well within my own rights, I had payed for the meal, albeit other peoples chunks had been payed off but that bit extra, plus I had bought one of my other mates an Indian anyway as he's skint.

What do you guys think?

Should I have tipped?

Was I in the right/wrong?

Thanks :)

They get paid a wage, why should you tip just because. If someone wants/deserves a tip then they will give you a higher class service and hopefully recieve a tip of a similar value in return.

If the service was crap etc then I would most definatly not tip ! So I think you did the right thing !

I have never really agreed with tipping anyhow but do give a reasonable tip if I feel I have recieved good service and food etc. But I certainly dont feel I have too.

I would probably have tipped if they had a little cash box or something. But when they make it compulsory like that, i would be offended and put a much smaller ammount (most likely nothing)

In this country it's not quite so bad because of the minimum wage, but certainly in other countries and to some extent in this country, waiters rely on tips to make a decent living.

Having said that, I tip for good service. As far as I'm concerned, it's their job to provide good service to customers. I don't get paid to do a substandard job at work, so why should I tip (pay) a waiter to do the same in a restaurant?

Oh, and I don't agree with adding tips to card bills (though I do sometimes do it). I'd much rather put the food on the card and give the tip in cash.

I think you were fine, I've got mates who'll tip come hell or high water no matter how bad the service has been, and I just never understand that.

I'll tip if I think the service has been above what I expected for the price of the meal. If I leave a tip i'll always leave cash, that way hopefully the staff will get it, and not the management which i reckon is what happens for places that take tips by card.

Really I'd just prefer if staff were paid a fair wage and the prices were a bit higher, and then no tipping was expected.

I very rarely tip, if ever. Why should I. when i have worked in supermarkets or electrical retail and i never got tipped there but i served people, took the purchases to the car for them and was very polite and professional. I never got tipped for doing that so why i should tip a waitor or taxi driver for soing thier job

I've tipped before,

in the Indian in Rainham the service is excellent the food is fantastic and its very cheap, so I always leave a tip.

But if I went there tonight and it was crap, no way would I tip.

Just quite astonished by how my mate reacted, but I think I did the right thing and you guys seems to have confirmed it.

Say no more. You were dead right not to tip.

I disagree with the concept of tipping so I would never tip on principle.

I think that's pretty harsh. As already said, there's a lot of waiters in other countries that rely on tips to get a decent wage. Of course, if the service is crap then you shouldn't!

I think tipping 1p was quite funny. It's probably more of an insult than not tipping at all!

Ok you got tipped twice. What a day? in your whole employment? Waitors and bar staff expect it from EVERY customer

You're in England and here it's customary to tip 10% for service and 15% if it's good. Just accept it and save yourself a lot of effort.

They add a gratuatory part to card payment just in case you want to tip but don't have the cash on you. It's nothing sinister. If you'd have added some story about how poor the service was then I could understand you not tipping then, but not tipping because it "weren't great" is cheap.
